Tranmission Questions
OK. I snagged the Transmission from e-bay to use as a spare and learning tool. It is an "R" type, no OD. I do have a few questions.
1. It has an electrical connection on it near where the the K1-6 (Master Parts Catalog) expansion plug goes. This is connection is not listed in the Transmission section of Parts Catalog. What is it?
2. I can move the K7-13 Lever and the K6-2 Shift Rail moves. How do I test the K6-1 Shift Rail on the bench?
It came as you see it on Plate 26, Parts Catalog, minus the tail flange. Gears look fantastic with no visible wear to the teeth. My goal is to cleaning out, put in new seals and gaskets and have it ready for sale or just in case.

sounds like you bought a drivemaster transmission. The electrical connection you see would be a governor. Physically it could replace a standard 3 speed but it may be geared differently, I think that some years of the drivemaster had a lower 2nd gear.
BTW If you currently have od, to use it as a spare would require replacing the driveshaft as the OD transmission is about 8 inches longer and of course you give up the benefits of the overdrive. The overdrive cannot be swapped overto the non overdrive though at first glance it is a bolt on unit.0 -
That switch on the left side of the tranny is the "shift rail swirch," and is involved with the automatic clutch part of the Drivemaster system. As such, it's listed in the clutch control section of the parts book. If you have the '48-'54 book, it's J3-37. As I understand it from a quick read of the Drivemaster manual, basically it enables the automatic clutch to operate at any speed (ignoring the governor) when it's in 1st or 2nd gear. In 3d, of course, you don't want the clutch to release every time you let up on the gas, except at lower, "gear shifting" speeds. Put another way, this switch puts the governor in control of auto clutch operation when you get into 3rd gear, and ignores the governor otherwise.0

Thanks, everyone. Per your help, it has to be the base of a Drivemaster.
So, it will be a learning tool for me to replace seals, bearing and gaskets.
It will be available it anyone needs it.
At least I did not pay too much for it.0
