1949 2 door stepdown for sale
I hate to do it but it looks as though I need money more than projects right now.
I have a 1949 stepdown 2 door that I bought from an estate sale - it hadn't run in years and I'm more a street rod guy anyway so it didn't matter to me. Pulled the engine and tranny and sold to a Hudson purist then started to plot my strategy. The body was in great shape at first look however upon teardown I found it had probably been in an accident in the left front area sometime in it's past. It had been repaired, but not well. Gaps were left allowing moisture to get in the floor panel near the dimmer switch area and below the left side rocker panel. That has been repaired again and done very well this time. The remaining work on the body as best I can remember (the car is in Orlando in dry storage and I haven't seen it in 3 years) would include the floor pan area at the front passengers feet. The rest is very solid, the trunk pan is solid and the only other thing I can remember as a RUST problem area might be the defrost area below the windshield on drivers side wa not a big concern to me but I sometimes am not the brightest candle on the cake sometimes. Actually my main concern was that someone sometime had stood on the roof and coffe canned it a bit in the center area, but this is REAL metal so I am sure it could be worked, shrunk, and regain it's memory.
I stripped the old paint and replaced with good primer, obtained an aftermarket outside visor, pulled the seats but kept safe if I choose to recover, got ready to put a GM front clip in and then came the '48 Liconln Continental Coupe that distracted my attention then relocation to Texas and now N.C. I could post some pictures but need insturction on how to avoid the size limitation I keep running into. I can email to you if you are intersted. The pics I have are mainly before and after paint strip and primer, I don't seem to have any of the interior but the dash is complete and I 'think' I even have an extra glove box cover with latch for the drivers side. I believe all glass is good, the winshield and rear window are wrapped and stored inside the car along with the rest of the parts. The rear windows roll up and down with one or two finger effort. The passenger side door window I think is broken and the other door window may be suffering from speration in the lamination - can't remember. The car is in Orlando area and is in the care of a friend of mine - it can be viewed if you or someone you know and trust would like to.
I am announcing this here to see if there is any interest and if not will head to my Ebay acoount :-/

This is a sad deal as I was looking forward to getting back to this project but my '54 Chevy p/u is requiring some TLC again 10 years after I streetrodded it and money is rather tight right now - you might have seen that info in the papers or on the news.

I hope you'll advertise this in the WTN (assuming you're an HET member) because it seems like a reasonable price for a good, sound body. And despite the heavy patronage of this Forum, there are even more Hudson people who read the WTN. Next ad deadline is Feb. 1.0

Here are pictures on the 49 Super Six as sent to me by Dave. It appears that the car is a brougham, but looks to be a fairly solid car. I am just hosting and posting the pictures, you will need to get in touch with the seller for more info. All 48 and 49 hudsons are LWB cars, SWB was not introduced till 1950 with the pacemaker series.0

I too am in communication with the owner. I'm within an hour of the Orlando area. As soon as I get a "viewing date", I will take my camera and try to capture the important areas. I'll put the pictures on Photobucket and post them here. I have a freshly rebuilt 308 and a OD transmission I could install in place of the missing 262, but then I would have tripled the value of the car! I also have a SBC and a Powerglide that would fit. Sure would make a nice ride..0

OK Guys. I went to see the Brougham today. I have a few more pictures on Photobucket. maybe they will show up..maybe they won't. Not a lot to add.
This is a 49 Super Six. 3 speed manual. Radio delete plate. Had heater and deluxe steering wheel ! This car has been taken apart! Piles of parts inside the car, in the trunk and some in the shed.All needing rework.
The bad stuff first. The engine and transmission is gone. No title. Appears to have been a North Carolina car. No salt on the roads up there. At least not while I lived there in the 50's. I found a late sixies and an early 70's NC tag inside. Upholstry, for the most part is gone. The seats are supposed to be available, but will need total rework. Seat Covers ain't gonna do it. Curved glass is out of the car and preserved. Most flat glass will need replaced. The front bumper may also be missing. There were no bumper supports on the frame, so are probably still attached to the bumper.where ever it is. There is some rustout on the front frame where the bottom apron of the front fender attaches to the rocker. This is very common and easily repaired. The rockers are rusty, but in my estimation, repairable. The front "dog house" is just sitting on the frame. It appears that all the fender aprons and valance panels are with the car. The shift cable (Single shift type) has been torched off. The steering wheel and center are there but need to be totaly rebuilt. The steering column is just laying inside the car. it's been unbolted from the frame. Drive shaft is disconnected and will need ujoints.I noticed the right front wheel is not Hudson, didn't look close at the rest of them but they are 15 " and probably correct. The inside is stacked high in parts. Mostly needing rework of some kind. The drivers door is not bolted on, so i didn't open it to check hinges. The roof will need to be reworked, as there are small stretch dents from someone walking(?) on the roof.
This car is saveable. Not for the faint of heart. Preferably someone that has experience with Stepdown restoration. A sedan parts car or donar car would be prefered. The rear frame shows no rustout at all. Floors are decent and may need minor patching. Making a street rod would be the easiest end use. A show restoration would take a great deal of effort and in my opinion, not financially viable. I have a completely rebuilt 308 and a good used OD single lever tranny i could install. If I figured the cost of my engine $3.500.00 and transmission, probably $150.00. Add a new clutch..U joints, battery ,starter. I would have a car that could not be driven and already have nearly $6K in it. No tires, no glass, no interior, no brakes,no suspension work , no exhaust system, No wireing, etc etc. All just to have Super Six? The same effort in a convertible would be a better investment.. But where does one find a Convertible with a solid body and frame like this car.?.A driver quality car may be possible for a total of 20K invested..doing your own work.
Bottom line.. Is it worth $2,500.00 ? Yes it is..... IF you want a project. At 69 years of age and arthritus making all manual work painful? Not for me...... If I was 35 again? It would be on my trailer now. I hope someone rescues it.
It's now being stored outside. Very close to I-4 North of Orlando. Easy to access. Someone please step up to the plate.
