Borge Warner auto. trans.
Hi - I have been working on a '54 Super Wasp with a B-W auto trans. It won't stay in the park position. Where are the detents that are suposed to hold the selecter lever in position located? I think they are in the trans. I guess that they have a detent spring and ball, but don't know for sure. Help. Thanks. Norm

I don't know if this will help or not, but I sort of had the same problem with My Borg Warner on my Hudson Hornet cpe. You couldn't touch the lever while you were working on the car on the inside. If so it would start to roll. This past week I took it to my mechanic with 1 u joint. Calls me up and says do you want the other two replaced. I said didn't know it had three. I said go ahead. Well now it's tight as you know what. Took all of the slack out of the trans. Now when I put it in park I really don't have to pull the emergency brake. What a diff. This is of course if your trans is working like it's supposed to. Man I've got everything under this car working like a charm. Even the gas tank sending unit finally works. (Jumping up & down).0

HGrandpa - I don't see what the U-joints would have to do with the trans not staying in park, but I'm glad that your's is working fine. Norm0

The first thing to check is the condition of the engine and transmission mounts, they should not be cracked or squeezed down. Then I would try a simple adjustment, with the car on jackstands or on a hoist, place the shifter in park. If it doesn't go far enough to lock the shifter in park position, you will need to loosen the adjuster till it does-then check if the driveline is locked in the park position. Another way would be to disconnect the lever at the trans. place both shifter in park and trans in park, then adjust rod to fit, checking that driveshaft is locked. Good Luck Lou Cote0

Not to swipe the thread, but I have one of those transmissions. Condition unknown. Came from a 54 Hornet Spl. No use for it. Make an offer and take it home. It's in florida.0

I've had one of these for decades. An important part that can wear out is the gear selector quadrant inside the car. I've a damaged wall as proof! The metal actually wears out and the step become a ramp and tuning vibration can cause it simply slip out of park into drive.
Apparently both the '54 B-W and Hydra castings are identical except for the plastic gear indicator window. I've a good one and there is a steep step from park to drive. Normally the button on the shift lever casting is unworn but should have a sharp edge. I always loved my B-W but onced swapped trannies when the torque converter was bad by mistake. Groan.0
