Ebay: WARNING WARNING WARNING

This afternoon I rcvd an email, supposedly from Ebay titled
"Important Security Updates on the eBay System - Action Required"
It has all the looks of an official ebay request and ends with the signature:
John Canfield
Senior Director, eBay Trust & Safety
There is a button to click on that says Go To Ebay and below a link to "Switch to the new system now"
Being an overly suspcious type I went to ebay on another server, logged into my ebay accound and checked ebay announcements. No suprise I didn't find anthing concerning new security updates.
I fwd'd it to ebay via spoof@ebay.com and rcvd, in part, the following answer:
Thanks for helping to keep eBay and the Internet safe by reporting
suspicious emails. The email you forwarded to us is a spoof, also known
as a phishing, email. (That's "phishing," as in "fishing" for personal
information.) Our Trust & Safety team is working to disable it.
Take care. These hackers are getting innovative. If it looks suspicious it probably is - tho I admit this one really looks genuine.

Thanks for the Ebay "heads up". However, I'm pretty use to these "phishing expeditions" from not only "Ebay", but "Paypal" as well. They almost always show up in my "spam e-mail" and are immediately deleted (never open them!). But, you still have to watch out and your advice is certainly worth keeping in mind for any suspicious e-mails. Particularly those that seek personal information from you.0

I've had those too, too bad!0
-
I just started doing e-bay. How can I tell if an e-mail is fake or not?0
-
Assume they all are fake. All correspondence will be duplicated under the "My eBay" tab after you log in to ebay.0
-
and they wonder why there isn't 100 % of us convinced that their 'PayPal' is such a great thing to participate in ! ! Something about it, I just don't trust my personal info. & credit card numbers in their hands.

Always check in "Messages" in "My eBay". If the message you have received is not there, someone is on a "phishing expedition". Just forward the phishing message to spoof@ebay.com. I seem to get a lot of that crap. Often the semi-literate message will accuse me of winning an auction I have never bid on. Don't ever open anything in such a message.0 -
I'm actually a little disappointed these days - the Nigerians, et al, have seemingly quit trying to deposit millions in my bank account if I'd just send them my bank account number, credit card number, social security number, name address and name of my first born.
It was fun to imagine what I'd do with the money if the offer was legit - just like the lottery.

I've used ebay and paypal for the last 12 years or more, and can say that 100% of those emails I've received were 'spoofs', which is really a nice word for CROOKS! As everyone says above, all correspondence you need will happen after you long onto your 'My eBay' account.0

It's not just Ebay & Paypal, I get them from Banks and all types of Financial institutions. Just hold your browser key over link and see what is on bottom of screen,If it will not be from Ebay or such it will come up as a different link. Be safe not sorry. It is not Ebay and suches fault, it is the scammers.0

Thank you all very much! What might be simple or obvious for some of you computer savey people is new to me. Thanks! I'm not very good with a mouse in my hand, I prefer a hammer. Come to think of it, I've often considered using a hammer on this computer when I couldn't get the mouse to do what I want.:D0

Reminds me of a time, when I was in the Coast Guard, stationed in Boston. During the day all phone calls were routed in thru a switchboard on the 2nd floor of the station. At night the switchboard was shut down and only about 3 lines were available thru a pushbutton phone at the duty desk.
One night the gal at the switchboard forgot to shut down the board - so all phone calls were coming in thru the 3 button phone on the duty desk. That night a Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6) name of Bly had the watch and had done nothing for over an hour but answer countless calls. I was sitting there on messenger and security watch and Bly said to me - "One more phone call and this thing goes out the window!!!" You got it - the phone rang.
A short while later Bly was on the phone in the office I worked in that had an outside line, independent of the switchboard. He called the phone company and complained our duty phone wasn't working. When asked the problem Bly told them the phone was out in the middle of Commercial Street being run over by passing cars. LOL Old Bly was a character.
