Finish for banjo steering wheel

I have a banjo steering wheel o n my 1936 Hudson eight. There was some cracking on the finish so I have sanded it down and it seems that this wheel is made from hard rubber or a substance such as that. I expect that most of these were painted. My question is what type of finish should I put on it. Black paint, Clear paint or something like armoral?

On the 37 banjo I am rebuilding I reworked the horn button to take the warp out of it. I sanded it down then put clear on it to get a good smooth surface. From what I have read at other steering wheel resto sites most of the wheels get a coat of clear to make them shine before they go out the door. Don't know it this helps but the horn button looked great after I put the clear on. The clear also helped seal the small cracks in the plastic. I hope to put some pics up in the next day or two of the 37 wheel and the recast parts.
