I have a 3 speed w/ overdrive from a 55 Hornet 308. Does this have any value? Can it be modified (without too much work) to work in a stepdown? It came out of a car with 99000 miles.

Thanks

Don

  • It has some value to me if you don't want to much for it. What are you thinking of asking for it?

Don,the stepdown trans and the Hash trans are 2 different to make them work. The Hash is a 10 spline clutch and the wet clutch is a 6 spline, also 2 different input shaft lenghts and pilot bearing diameters. Apples and oranges. You can make anything work,it's all about time & $$$.
  • stepdown also has open drive vs the torque tube of the hash. if it were me, i would be looking for a t86/r10 rear housing, bellhousing and input shaft for a stepdown, its all about just how much effort you want to put in.
  • Damn. Won't work on my '48 then. I think all I really need is to re-ratio the rear end anyway.
  • I thought I asked him if he was selling the tranny but I haven't seen an answer. So I'll ask again, Don, are you selling the trans and if so what do you want for it?

I haven't decided if I am going to sell it yet. It all depends on if i can get the 1955 308 running. I probably already told you the story when I sent you the speedo, but the previous owner blew a head gasket, took the head off, and then let it sit. I got it unstuck, but I need to replace dist. parts, wires, plugs, etc....If I decide it is a lost cause, We can work out a deal for the trans. I am not sure what it weighs, but I have sent many bigs parts on greyhound, and they are really inexpensive compared to other carriers.

  • Don, that's cool, I thought in the beginning you were looking to sell it. I think the 308 should be pretty easy to get going for you. The Speedo is still working great now that I know to keep it oiled. There are so many things about these old cars that we used to know to do and have forgotten now that the new cars do it all for us. I was talking with a friend the other day and he was telling me he will never own another carbureted car. He likes never having to think about keeping his car running. I like having the Hash and keeping it running. By the way, what did you do with your radiator? Mine needs a new core and I just don't want to have to cough up $350 for a new one right now. Thanks for the answer though,at least I'm not wondering.

i will presuure test radiator tomorrow to see if it is any good and will let you know. I don't need it. I was going to get around to it "some day" but if you are in need I will get on it. How many lbs. does a Hash radiator need to hold?
  • Don, I don't know what it will pressure to, maybe there is a radiator guy on here who will know.

1955 Hudsons used a 7 psi radiator cap.
