Stepdown radiator replacement

If I remember right, someone told me that a 1986 3/4 ton Dodge van (truck?) radiator would drop right in with almost no modifications.

Can anyone confirm that? Is it 3-row? Any other suggestions?

I run a 350 with a built 200R4, and I want to tow a trailer over the Continental Divide, with air conditioning.

Any other suggestions?

  • My Hornet has a Chrysler powertrain from what I was told was a 1976 Chrysler stationwagon, however, when I had the radiator re-cored the guy at the radiator shop said it was from a 1976 Dodge van. It does fit right in. Anticipating heating problems while cruizin' at the Route 66 Rendezvous every year (avg. temp around 95 - 103 degrees) I put 1/2 inch spacers to move the radiator closer to the fan. The car has never run hotter than 185 deg.
  • Thanks for the quick reply. I'm in So Cal too - San Diego. As I search the internet trying to get closer and closer to this answer, I keep coming up with more questions.

    360cu? 400? Air/no air. Heavy duty cooling, rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive...

They all look like they have the same manufacturer's part number - CU889 - so I can't tell if they're different variations or just a listing of the differerent vehicles the same radiator fits.

Any ideas? Do you know how many rows your radiator has?
  • mid 70s Chry. are pretty close to the PU and van radiators , I put a 77 Cordoba radiator in my 81 Dodge PU so I could use the heavy duty radiator out of it in my Hudson . the PUs and vans from the mid 70s through the 80s are all about the same , some are taller , those are really close in size to the original Hudson radiators , Id say a 3/4 ton PU radiator that is 3 core would be the one to look for
