212 engine noise
About a year ago I bought a 47 Commodore 6. The guy told me it ran perfect, just needed a fuel pump. I bought it and a week later got it cranked, and it runs perfect- just makes a noise. It ticks or taps like a lifter is bad out of adjustment. Everyone tells me it's a valve. I've driven about 4,000 miles and it never gets worse (or better). The odometer reads 48,000 which I believe is accurate. The other day though a guy asked me, "Hey, don't you ever put oil in that thing?" That got me worried, since I keep it full of oil. I've never heard another 212 running. I'm here in east Texas, not a good old car hobby place. I've never even seen another Hudson, ever, well 1 at a swap meet a 1920s model. I'm thinking a rod would've already came loose with stuoid me hoping it's a lifter. Any suggestions?

A lifter could have a little extra clearance. Wouldn't affect normal running but you can hear em easily on a 212 because they are solid lifters with clearance. Also, it could be the fuel pump.
Try to locate the tick with a solid rod on the fuel pump and on the front and rear valve cover, and the other end tight against your ear. Keep it well away from anything moving.
If you suspect a loose lifter, you'll have to adjust them. Intakes .012 and Exhaust .014 (including the extra .002 for the new hot gas) and another .001 if setting them cold. per Walt Mordenti0 -
I installed an electric fuel pump when I got the car, but I just bought a rebuilt mechanical one I'm planning on putting on this weekend. If that doesn't stop the noise then I'll listen to those valves. The electric pump puts out too much pressure and it floods sometimes, plus I like to keep things original. Thanks.0

To help eliminate the posibility that it's a rod bearing , piston slap, or wrist pin problem.. Do the following. With the engine ideling as slowly as possible, disconnect one spark plug at a time and reconnect them. If the noise goes away on one or more of the cylinders while the plug is disconnected, you DO have a problem in the pison/rod assemble. If the noise remains constant, check for valve noise or fuel pump noise as suggested in a previous post. good luck.

Sound like a stuck exhaust valve.... I would do a compression check and find out which cylinder it is. Then pull the plug and spray with http://www.kanolabs.com/google/
you can also spay in all cylnders if your not sure which one.... If it's a stuck valve, which it sounds like it is, after a few days put plug or plugs back and run..... Make sure after you run to change the oil..... My guess is the valve will sit down.. and engine will run quiet..I had the same issue and it works...
If this doesn't work... it could be other things mentioned above. ... However I would try the remedy above first....0 -
Thanks for all the help. Too bad it got dark before I could get to my computer today, tomorrow I'll go check it out. Had to go do some mowing today.0

If a valve was stuck it would have a bad miss.0

Mowing indeed! All our grass is under 3 feet of snow.0

We never get snow, or even winter. The weather is all crazy nowdays. Our county, and most of Texas is alredy under a burning ban. We never even get rain but the grass is growing. I was talking to a guy up north the other day about some parts and I mentioned that I hadn't been out to work on my car in a few days because it was freezing cold. He asked how cold it was, I told him 38 or 42, something like that. He told me it was like -10 there in Minnesota!0
