antenna @#$%^*
I've looked at earlier posts about removing the roof antenna from a stepdown. I saw that some have a set screw in the plastic knob. Can't find it in my '54. Others said you basically have to destroy the plastic knob to get at various attaching nuts. True?

What I've found helpful to remove the knob is to enlarge the hole where the screw is. Of course, you need to locate the screw first. I drill out the hole with a larger drill bit and then I find a screwdriver will fit better.0

The hole may have been filled by a prior owner in an attempt to repair and paint it.
If you can find the hole(it's on the side) enlarge it some(good advice given already) use a screw driver with a thick blade even if you need to file it. A thin bade will put too much pressure on the corners of the set-crew and break it. Most people break that screw and that's what creates most of the problems.
Use plenty of penetrating lube at each point of the process. The knob will still be stuck on the shaft after the set- screw is removed spray-wiggle and pull, over and over and over and you'll eventually get it off the shaft.
Good luck and be patient.
take the set- screw all the way out and use that opening as another lube penetrating area.

Believe it or not, I have seen these new old stock and still in the box even! That had that handle stuck fast to the threaded shaft underneath. It looks like the plastic actually shrinks over the years and depending on how much yours has shrunk?? You might have to destroy the knob to get it apart, as you mentioned. I hope not, but don't be surprised.0
