Adjusting door strkiers

I got a set of new strikers, and the doors seem to close better. But I'm not quite sure they close very well. I've had a door open in flight, and that wasn't too fun.

What are the other variables involved in getting the doors on a 48 super six to close snugly without slamming them.

Thanks again;

  • Proper adjustment is the key. I believe the procedure is covered in the shop manual. Alternatively, Walt Mordenti published an article in the WTN covering latch adjustment. Personally, I'd say try closing the doors without the strikers installed to verify that you don't have any biding related issues. If the door will close flush, installing the strikers and patiently fiddling around with them will net the result you want. BTW, wear seat belts just in case. :)

    The stepdowns have a 2-step latching mechanism - if the door popped open it probably never hit the second catch.

    Daves suggestion of removing the stiker and seeing if you have any sagging or binding issues is spot on and an excellent place to start.
  • And make sure they are well lubed and you can operate the latch by hand when the door is open.

    Walt here. Open the door and try to lift it up to see if there is play in the hinges, if yes you can never adjust that door to close correctly. If no play, remove the striker plate and make sure the door closes all the way in. Then install the striker plate but leave it all the way out and make sure the back side is straight up and down. Now close the door and watch where the door lock finger starts into the striker, for it must start just above the bottom. Once you have that set then slowly close the door and you should feel 2 clicks. Now slowly move the striker in a little at a time till you have the door snug to the body and feel 2 clicks as you push the door close. No more slamming. Lube the striker and lock finger with vasoline and a little on the top surface. One other thing, make sure the finger is solid with no play that you can move by hand, if yes, lock must be removed and repeaned.
