  • It's probably the rubber bushings with the vulcanized threaded portion broken off at the u-joint cradle
  • I suppose they're not bushings (don't know what else to call'm)----they have threaded parts at each end of the rubber.

Thats what I also suspect. Maybe others have a differant guess. Thanks for your input.

usually when those mounts are bad, you get a thump from the driveshaft hitting the floor on acceleration

Thanks Nick !! I don't seem to hear any thumping going on. May that's next. I guess I will have to visually inspect drive shift bushings.

I think rpmonroe's estimatation is correct without further info. Another question I have to ask is, have you recently replaced the transmission mount?

Modern reproductions have too hard of a rubber pad on them and Hudsons will have a bad "clunk" when downshifting to 1st. Usually there is not much of a vibration, just the hard downshift. Best to go with an NOS or good used tranny mount, as the original rubber is much softer than modern vulcanized material.

    Hi Russel,

It has had the tranny done just before I got it. That is very interesting about rubber. It does shift a little hard on down shift. You learn more stuff on this forum. Thanks guy,s !

  • Two things to check for a harsh 2-1 coast downshift. 1) Is the engine idle speed set correctly? too fast will cause a clunk. 2) Is the throttle pressure and carb linkage set according to the shop manual?, Too much throttle pressure can cause harsh coast downshifts. Just a couple things to try. Lou Cote
