The shaft is a horizontal one. There is bellcrank for the rod that comes down from the lever that is one the column, that connects the rod back to the trans. This is a single shift rod car, former Drivemaster equiped, 1949.0

Heya,
Me and my dad have worked on this issue with my 49 recently. For a quick fix he had put some large, thick washers on that horizontal shaft. Someone else along the line also did this to my car. It is still alittle loose but much better. I did order a pair of shift linkage bushings from kgap that came a couple of days after the car was all buttonened back up. I haven't had a chance to put the new bushings on tho. I don't have the motor manual here with me for the directions on how to adjust the shifter. I don't know if this will help at all,hopefully someone with more experience will be able to help.

BTW..we had to take the seat cushion out and lift the dust cover to get access to all the things we needed to get to0 -

I had a similar problem on my 49. I found some bronze bushings at Ace Hardware that had the same inside diameter as the rods. I drilled my bellcrank to fit the bushings. I even off set them a bit to get a little more travel on my transmission rod. It smoothed things out, but I still have a problem with not wanting to stay in reverse.No matter how I adjust it , it either jumps out of first or reverse. So far, I decided to live with the jumping out of reverse problem. From what the service manual says, I have some worn internal parts.... (So does the transmission LOL):D0 -
The bushing in the bell crank is thin bronze on a sheet steel tube. After the grease fitting is removed and the rods separated the crank may be removed and inspected. After the splash pan is removed, you can get right at it.
To tighten up the action of the bellcrank you can insert brass shim material into the bushing and add washers on the shaft to reduce end play. On mine the rod ends don't have a lot of wear so I left them alone, except for adding washers.
The shift lever seems action seems better, After I get it down from the jackstands I'll test it out.0 -

Was/is this a statement or question? Again,restore the pieces you need! Mcmaster -Carr catologs are very helpful in special needs applications. Also,you need a shop manual!:rolleyes:0 -
Get rid of the bell crank and get a solid rod from a non-drivemaster equipped car.0
