Filling battery cells

I think I used to know this, but how full should each cell be? This is a 12v battery (if it matters) and I know to use purified water.

  • There is a visual reference. As you add water, when the cell is full enough, you can see the surface of the liquid change from a "flat" appearance to a "curved " appearance as the liquid touches the bottom of the molded in fill cylinder in each cell. If I remember correctly from science class this is called a "meniscus".

Back in Dad's gas station in the early 50's dad's instructions were not as exact or scientific as Tom's but the message is the same. I still remember replacing the caps on the batteries and licking my finger tips because I enjoyed the tast of the acid that was left on the caps? I am much smarter today, but I could not pass by when I purchased and added water to my reproduction "Tar Top" battery--the wonderful taste is still the same.
  • I'm not sure what you're calling 'purified' water. But, you should use distilled water in your battery.

You're a brave man to admit that. I bet your dentist complimented you on your teeth being clean and tartar free. :D
  • Fill battery when fully charged if possible, fill to top of plates with distilled water. Do not fill battery any more than that. As the battery charges it pushed the water out of the plates and absorbs it when discharging. If you fill when discharged it will boil over and cause a mess. If distilled water is not available at least try to filter out sediment from fresh water.
