Hello,

My 1947 pickup does not have the correct tank installed, but I have this tank that came with some extra parts when I bought the truck. From these pictures, can anyone tell me if this is the correct gas tank for a 1947 Hudson Cab Pickup?

    FYI

I recomend the Renu Tank Process in your Area, TheY did wonders for two Hudson Tanks for me.

It looks better than the tank that came with my truck. I hope yours can be saved. Mine is too rusted out. Good luck. Lee

I put a late '80s Camaro tank in mine that dfit nicely then curved the fill pipe up thru the bed floor. Its a hassle dragging the hose over the painted bed side though. If were doing again I would adapt to go thru the fender by cutting the pipe and use a hose to connect to Hudson pipe

I'm told it's harder to find a good '46-'47 Hudson tank than it is a step-down tank. Gas tank renu costs like $300. I'm trying to get it done cheaper but I don't care to do it myself.

A little more money and it would be cheaper to get a new non-original tank. Assuming you don't care about originality.

I'm still trying to finish up the stainless roproductions on the 41-47 hudson pickup gas tanks, will probably be mid to late summer. working out a way to have stock fuel pickup tube and sender location on back, with maybe putting a top secret fuel injection door on top for fuel pump/ sender/ fittings for EFI systems. my 41 pickup has a 07 LS2 vette EFI motor and 6 speed going in it, my 47 needs a stock one. also seeing if general tank dimensions will work for other years hudsons (need one for my 37 tplane). I have a friend in a stainless fab shop, so money wise the R&D is working out....

Thanks for the information on your stainless tank. Will you be reproduceing the tanks to sell. If so, what will be the price. I like your idea to make the tanks compatable to both the original and also for EFI. My son bought me a 2005 Chevy pu LS engine and automatic transmission to put in my 47 pu. I haven't decided to do it yet. I'm torn between keeping it original or to modify. A dual purpose gas tank would make it possible to go either way. And only have to buy one tank. Question. How deep can the gas tank be and still be able to mount the spare tire under the bed? The reason I ask is, I was told that the EFI tanks are deeper so that the fuel will keep the intank EFI electric pump cool and the pump will last longer. Those LS engines make some awesume power with lead foot and easy to drive with a light foot. I hope you will post some pictures of your LS2 installation. Lee

I figured I would get all done and figure out price from there. the factory tank has plenty of depth for modified stock ls1 or ls2 fuel pump/pickup/sender. doing my 41 so that nothing is modified outside of bolt on or off to put stock motor and trans back in, case it ever goes that way. right now, an all aluminum V8 with 400 plus horsepower dead stock, makes truck lighter at under 3000 pounds with 6 speed. gas mileage should be over 30 mpg hiway!! and perfect manners!! anyway, hardeast part of getting the tanks done is the stainless filler neck end so that you can use an original gas cap.

As a long ago hot rodder you have perked up my interest in your project. To bad you live so far from Burbank, Ca. I'd love to be helping you with it. Question. You mention the original gas cap. Do you mean original vented cap or original style non vented cap? I was under the impression EFI needed a non vented cap. I hope you don't mind if I ask you questions about other aspects of your project, as I ponder the posibility doing a similar installation. By the way, who said that you can't speell? Have a good day. as far as the caps go, just meant "bayonet" style, like stock, compaired to "screw-in" style, like modern cars have. you can get the old caps vented or non-vented, your right on EFI being non-vented. harley-davidson early style caps came both vented and non-vented and fit hudsons. used to live in bellflower/long beach. worked at bellflower harley (closed now), L.A. harley in southgate, orange county harley in santa anna, and pro cycle in atascadero. wish I had your weather, gas tanks would be done by now! (economy kept garage cold this year). anyway, I will post results on tanks when get more done....

Thanks for the information. I wish I had a garage to work in. Most of my relatives live in or around Atascadero. My brother lives in Paso Robles. He may have bought his motorcycle where you worked. Small world.
  • I got my 2000 Heritage at L.A. Harley in Nov. 1999. Now I have $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in it. LOL

Nice bike Ron. Can I borrow your tank. It might fit my pu. I think I can make the filler neck from my tank fit. No. Its to nice to go under the bed. Maybe on top of the nose of the hood. What do you think?

Hi Steve, I went back to your post to look at your truck. Your truck is the same color as mine. It looks better than mine. Mine has faded thru to the metal in spots. It needs a repaint among many other needs. Can you show some more pictures of your truck. I can't tell the condition of your running boards. But, if you should need new ones Bent Metal, on the forum, can make new ones for you. He is a very talented metal fabricator. I've seen his work. Hope you find a tank soon. Lee

    Hello Lee,

If you can drop me an e-mail, I can e-mail some photos to you. I've got about 300 of various views of my truck. I am new to Hudson's, and I have found a wealth of useful information on this forum, and from the friendly people I have talked to. I can tell that the Hudson community is friendly and unique one.

    Take care,
