Hello guys-
I've got a few questions. The answers may be readily available but I have not been able to find them. I've got a '41 coupe. The serial number identifies it as a deluxe 6.
#1. How do you tell the difference between the 175ci engine and the 212?. I am assuming that I have the 175, but since the car was built with a few options I am guessing that it's possible that it is a 212.
#2. I will be looking to put in a 212ci in any event. What year overdrive transmissions will fit the 212 engine?
#3. Does anyone have the part # for the flasher used in the factory equipped turn signal units in 1941? My car has the turn signal but was not equipped with front lights. The present flasher(which does not work) is for the 2 light system and I'm assuming the the four light flasher may have a different number. Also, where can I get the flasher?

Usually on the 175 cylinder head it has "SUPER POWER DOME" and it also is a 1 bbl.. On the left rear corner of the head there is a flat boss,clean the off and it tells the compression ratio-7.2 / 1. Sometimes you can't see it because of a weak stamping. No other distiguishing features. Also,the difference is the crankshaft and rods,you can disassembly this engine and install a 212 crank and rods and have the same serial # but have a 212 CID. Cylinder bores are the same. The O/dr. that is correct for this car is 41-47, but you can install the single lever O/dr.from a 48-52 and just change the bell-housing ***you removed from YOUR car**over to the later trans. The solenoid is on the drivers side but this doesn't seem to matter. I installed an o/dr. in Steve Traudt's "41 business cpe. last winter. I also changed it to a '10 clutch assembly but the "9 seems to work well also in this application. O/dr.,16t speedo gear,and 4:10 rear axle,225/70/15 tires miss each milemarker by about 50 feet. I think it is real close to cruise right along at 60-65 with no problems and gets approx.19-20 MPG. He says it's a pleasure to drive.:cool:0

Er...actually the stepdown 48 - early 52 overdrive trannys must be unbolted from their bell housings and bolted to the 41-47 bell housing..from the inside of the housing. 6 bolts if I remember right.0

??, Did I confuse what action to take here?. Change the bell-housing over?? Same bolt pattern to mount the trans and bell-housing[6-7/16th's-14 bolts,which must be sealed so they won't leak ] using the same bell-housing from 41-47 trans. you are replacing onto the 48-52 trans.. These use the same front seal,rear seal,side replacement shift shaft seal,same top cover gasket,but mid-plate gaskets are different. I guess I assumed to much,sorry to confuse anyone.
The solenoid is also different for the later model trans. and DO NOT interchange with the 41-47 series. I also recommend using the 50 and up style of wiring the late model o/dr.,makes things much simpler.0 -

I sure agree on the OD wiring. It got simpler and simpler or is it More simple and more simple? Anyway it did got less complex as time went by.0 -
It seems that answers always bring up more questions for me. I've determined that the engine I have is a 175ci. If I use a 212 crank and rods, can I still use my 7.25:1 head, or do I have to use the 212's 6.5:1 head? It would seem that my compression would be bumped up some from 7.25 with the longer rods.
Also, if I can go either way with the o/d transmission, which is recommended, the '41-"47, or the later '48-52? What problems arise with the solenoid if I decide to run a 12 volt alternator instead of the 6 volt generator
Any help is appreciated.0 -
The 41-47 std.3sp.transmissions are the same style, with some slight updates compared to the 48-52 single lever. The 48-52 O/dr.however ,had several changes and none of the hard parts interchange except the rear output yoke. Finding a 48-52 trans is probably easier to locate too.:cool:
The 175cid cylinder head is probably a good inprovement,but I don't know for sure.
When using the 48 and up trans.you can find a 12v solenoid to use.0 -
I've been using a 6 volt solenoid on 12 volts for years. No problems.. Now that I've made it public ?????0
