Need a 33 ET8 axle shaft--what other models would interchange?

Was out driving my '33 Phaeton this afternoon with some of the family on board and suddenly no drive through the rear end. I suspect the right axle shaft has broken and am looking for help finding a replacement. Can anyone say which other Hudsons/Terraplane models would use that axle shaft? The 33 Essex Terraplane 8 was a one year car and I hope I'm not looking for a needle in the haystack. And if anyone knows of one available somewhere, that's great too.

Thanks for thinking........

Ivan, do you have the parts interchange manual, or even the parts book for those years. It usually tells you which parts work for other years. I will try to hoble out to the garage tomorrow (I broke my ankle) and see if I can figure it out for you. Richard E.

Bad news I'm afraid, the part number for the '33 Terraplane is 42265, and is listed against no other model. I'm sure the spline would be the same, but probably the length is different.

    Ivan,

The Railton Club hopefully will have one if you can't get one anywhere else. I seem to recall there was some company on the web selling new crown wheels and pinions for old cars including Terraplanes. Maybe they have axles as well.

give fred pinder in michigan a call,616-677-3720. he is listed in the wtn. under tech. advisors.he has many parts and is a nice guy. he also has a 33 conv. which is a 8 cyl.
  • Look's like the axle fits all 33T 6 or 8 cyl. I may have one in my parts collection for my 33T8 Cv project. I'll have to look. E-mail @ HETsuper6esx@comcast.net (drop the HET)

Ivan - just sent you an e-mail, thought I'd post here too in case you'd see this 1st, that I found a guy who'd just bought front & rear axles of a '33 T8. I'm getting the front backing plates which @#$!@#$!@ hot rodders had removed 40 years ago GOOD NEWS!

    Pete,

    Good News , indeed.

Do you want me to buy the rear axle assembly and have it shipped to California? How do we play this out?

    Ivan
  • Pete, I know you are to be in San Diego some time soon. If its before next Wed I could take the axle with me to Oakhurst for Ivan. buzz

    Buzz - axle in Mass.

    I'll be over Apr. 24-26.

Told Ivan I could bring it back from Pontiac if he makes a deal to buy the entire axle & isn't in that big of a hurry.
  • Pete, I look forward to seeing you when you are in S.D. we need to catch up over a beer. I miss the chats we had with Gary K Pat M and Elliott M wish it could happen once again. If you still have the 30--39 Master Chassis Parts List I think I should buy it. If it's still for sale bring it with you and consider it sold. buzz

Yes, will catch up at end of the month.

I frequently exchange e-mails with Elliott, occasionally with Pat, & Gary seems to have shut down his e-mail.

I only have 1 '30-39 Master Chassis which I need to keep for work on the Railton but may have a '30 -'36, will take a look. If so will bring it over, the price = 1 beer, LOL.

    Jon,

That's the exact site I knew I had seen somewhere a few years back, but could not for the life of me find again!!! It doesn't seem to be on search engines. I've bookmarked it now which perversely means I probably will never need it again.

Actually the '33 ET8 axle is found on this page:

They also have new Hudson and Terraplane, Essex crown wheels and pinions for some models including the 3/4 ton commercial lines. eg NOS 4.1:1 for ET8 $425 or the low ratio 4.56:1 for $375.

It's a long shot, but I have about a dozen '30's era axle shafts of differning lengths. If you send me the specs of your axle I can measure these up and see if anything is the same.

Thanks Geoff. Clearly I need to extract the bits and do some measuring. So many have offered to help--what a great bunch the hudson world is!

Ivan - repeat of offer: if you can arrange purchase of '33 T8 rear axle from Tom, as I'll be driving my truck to Pontiac, can bring entire axle.

Thanks to all of you who have helped with this problem. The item terraplane8

sees on Ebay is listed by Vintage Auto Parts who were the only source I found with new axles for the '33 ET8. They have a good web site.

    www.vapinc.com

It turns out that after all that, I did not find a broken axle. I found the nut and washer that hold the drum on the axle rattling around in the hub cap, no key at all in the axle, no cotter pin in the nut, and the only thing keeping the wheel and drum on the car being the tire hitting the fender inside! Could have been a bad one, but the axle was OK, and the drum taper cleaned up with some lapping on the axle. Put it all back and am driving again. Who knows who put the drum on in such a way to roll the car around? And then it passed on through new owners who did not check and did not drive. And then I started driving..............

Thanks again to all and I'm glad the Vintage Auto Parts site came out of this.

They want $155 for the axle at their "store" and the opening bib is $125 on Ebay.

Sure glad everything came out OK Ivan.

Did you ever contact Tom B. about the entire axle?

Was down at Buzz', eyeballed the '50 C8 cp. & your "project" - both coming along very well. If you guys go to Bonneville next yr. I'm going to come up!
