Brought the '49 back home today

:):)Went to Reno this afternoon and picked up my '49 Super "6" Sedan from the generator shop. They had it for several weeks, had a difficult time trying to find out why the discharge light stayed on all the time. Generator worked fine, but a problem somewhere from the regulator. They did rewire the gen, to reg. and the light also replaced the starter solenoid. Now it works. Headed home and the old Hudson drove and ran prety well. Only one problem on the way home was on a long upgrade, the engine would like miss, a couple times but on the straight a way it ran fine. It has a new filter, and a NOS carburator along witth a rebuilt fuel pump. I am just going to have to drive this car for awhile and see what happens. I feel that the cutting out is a fuel problem. However, the forty five mile trip home was the farthest that I have driven this Hudson at any time in the past five plus years. Was thinking about taking it to the Western in Yosemite in a couple weeks, but am having second thoughts. Have a Great Hudsoning weekend. Arnie in Nevada

An intermittent miss under load sounds t'me like a spark plug.
  • Agree with U J. A weak plug or plug wire will do this on a slight upgrade running at a good speed. Found a bad almost new wire a while back that had been cut with out any of the wire core sticking out the end on the plug end. Cut the cover back leaving the wire out about 5/16 inch folded it back installed boot and clip. Been run couple thousand mile since and not a miss. Oh yes I checked the other plug abd coil wires they were dont right to begain with.
  • So, it was the wiring after all.

In this case yes. ( plugs were changed first) would run perfect at idle and up till you hit a slight grade and put pedal to the metal and you would feel a slight skip at times. Found the bad one by checking each wire from end to end with test meter.

:)Thanks, I will check the wires and plugs this weekend. I put new plugs and I am sure wires in the Hudson a while back, however one could be bad. That will give me something to do between the "honey-do's". Hudson's were made to be driven, and drive them, we will. Arnie in Nevada

Missing under load is usually a sign of very lean mixture or weak spark. I would first look at the points and make sure they are clean and properly gapped. Many times. the gap decreases as the rubbing block wears down. This will affect the dwell ,timeing and produce a weaker spark than you need. The Pertronics ignition system is the way to go.

I'm glad your 49 is back home and the generator problem solved. I had a similar miss problem with my AMX recently. After alot of checking - wires, carb, timing, plugs, possible vacuum leaks, maybe bad gas because it hadn't been driven for some time. The solution turned out to be replacing the rubber hose from the tank. The hose had deteriorated enough to cause a fuel restriction. I have to give credit to a mechanic friend for discovering that. He replaced the hose with one that is compatable with todays fuels. The AMX hasn't run this good in years. Hope to see you at the Western in Yosemite. Lee
