Let me respond to your comments in order.

1. I will make sure the thermostat is 160 degrees. Are they marked or do I have to test it with a thermometer in hot water??

2. Walt, how do I restrict the by-pass flow?

3. I put 18 quarts of coolant into the radiator so the cooling system has to be full.

4. The right side panel went missing in the R and R of the engine so that may be part of the problem.

5. The water jacket is NOS with the proper sized holes—small to large--front to back.

Question--The car was running between the second and third marks on the gauge before the rebuild and according to Walt Mordenti that is between 160 and 180 degrees. The only thing that is different is the missing panel on the right side of the radiator---could that missing side panel make that much difference in operating temperature??

Turn the thermostat over and look at the brass center, it's marked with the 160, or higher. The short hose that connects the housing to the water pump, install a restricter with a 1/8 hole through the center as you have to have a small amount of water going through at all times. The original thermostat would shut the by pass off when it opened. You must install the right side radiator shield to get all outside air to the radiator. Now here is a problem we had back in our days. The water jacket has 5 holes into the inner panel. The forth hole is restricted because it lines up with an inner support bar, so we were told to remove the water jacket and at the forth hole, grind a half moon circle on each side so water could now flow to number 5 and 6 cylinder walls. Walt.
