Vin decoding/engine codes
Im trying to find out more about my HUD.
I have the vin on the door pillar and the serial of the motor. They do not match so i want to find out more about both.
Can someone get me some links to some documents or anything on hudson vin and engine codes?
thanks
:some info:
** I have a wasp with a 52 hood and 52 or earlier radio but the grill is a 53?
in the brougham model
**my engine says 262 but im wondering if it maybe a 308 with a 262 head for more compression, I guess that was the thing to do?

First numbers are the model followed by the serial number. You don't say what model you have so I'll use a '52 Wasp for example:
Wasps in 1952 were designated 5B; serial numbers for 1952 began at 132916 and ended with 202916. It should appear on door pillar tag a 5B-xxxxxx. Serial numbers were assigned, in sequence, regardless of model or body style.
To the best of my knowledge there isn't any source of engine codes - I'm not sure if they were used or not. To tell, from the exterior, if the engine is a 262 or a 308 is the 308 has a rib down near the oil pan on each side.
If I'm wrong on any of this there will be corrections - one of the great things about this forum.

Ok thanks, Mine starts with a 4C then 204xxx and its a wasp brougham
can you tell me what the first built and last built serial number were for the 4c models?
I will look for the rib on the engine tonight and see if its there or not.
thanks0 -
4C is a Wasp Deluxe model; 5C was a Wasp Super.
Serial numbers for 1953 started at 202917 and ended at 269059. First month production (November 1951) ran from 202917 thru 208037 - therefore your Wasp is a very early model. There were 792 cars built in November 1951.

so now im confused....Since its a 4c its a 53 though right? or doesnt that mean 53? you have to go by the serial numbers or?
And i didnt get lucky enough to have a 308 with a 262 head dang it. looks to be a 262 block.0 -

the C does mean 53 (4 is wasp for that year)
your car would have been a 232. so if it is a 262 your luck isn't as bad as you thought. 232 and 262 are identical externally. Not all years arebut some have the engine serial number prefixed by the model designation but if it does you may be able to decipher which it is by that e.g. if you can determine it is a pacemaker it is a 232, a super wasp, s6 or c6 it is a 262 or if it carries a 48 or 49 serial number it is a 262. however wasps could have been either in some years.0 -
So what's the engine number? If not same as car number, the engine's been changed. The engine number would shed some light on "changed to what?" Also, in some years the 262 engine was an option for base Wasp models with 232 as standard.0

The 262 was an option for the Wasp series in 1953 production0

Sorry 'bout that - my fingers got confused. Truth be that 1953 Wasp models were 4C and 5C.
1953 serial numbers started at 202917 and ended at 269059.
Your 204xxx serial number means the car was built in November 1952 and there were 5121 cars built in Novermber 1952.
Sorry 'bout the confusion.

Here is the pic of the front grill, maybe im confused when they started putting this grill in production i thought it was 53?
But they must have started doing that in late 52 models?
The car is titled a 53 also???

The engine number is:
304299 cwc 40 -
Pretty sure your car is a 53. I think Wasp's still used 52 style hood ornements in 53. The engine number is stamped on the right side of the block near the water pump/by the head. I think the number you listed is a casting number0
-
What your pic shows is correct for a 53 wasp. The number you gave is the casting number. the serial number is stamped vertcally in front of the exhaust manifold at #10
-
Is the bumper correct with the 4 guards? or is the wasp model only suppose to have 2?0
