309742
300022 - 1948-1949 Group Parts book (copy on my on-line library - see below for URL). This one is stock for 1948-1949 six cylinder.
1952 parts catalog lists 306344 for 1952 six cylinder - somebody with a 48-54 parts catalog can fill in the other years.

Hudsontech, I agree with you 100%. Now im interested what the 309742 is out of.
So would i be ok to replace my 300022 with the 306344 with out any trouble in my 49?0 -
The following was posted on this site in the past.
"All Hudson engines (232, 262 & 308) come with a 306344 cam which became the standard low HP cam for Hudsons in '53. The '54 Hudsons first came out with the 309742 (7X) "Flat-top" cam and later in April '54 was replaced with the 306344A series cam. The 311040 cam (Super 7X high- lift cam .390" gross lift) came out in the fall of '53 for all-out oval track racing and has been a "severe usage" cam since. The HP rating of all 308 std. engines equipped with Twin-H power and 7.5 to 1 C.R. (alum. head) using a 306344 cam is 155 HP when using a 309742 (7X flat top) cam the HP is 170; and when using the 311040 Super 7X cam the rating is 180 HP. Regards, Barry0 -
Going from memory here, but was not the "chain stretcher" cam used in 54 stepdowns, and the subject of a widescale recall?
The chain stretcher cam or one very similar was used sucessfully in the hydraulic lifter 308's?0 -
I finally found some info on the 309742 courtesy of Jasper Kleinjan out of ND.
Attachment not found.
And here is some other High performance cam info
Attachment not found.
Hope this helps for anyone else looking at replacing their cam.0 -

There has indeed been much discussion about stepdown cams, and some lift and duration information has been posted. If you have a micrometer, you should measure the lift of each of your examples and post it so we can continue to gather data on these cams. The 309742 has always been of great interest because it was originally made available as the first "flat top 7X" cam and became standard in 308s early in '54. It was discontinued through '55 apparently but reappeared in '56 with hydraulic lifters. Ads at the time announced that the '56 cam was of "an improved design". The '56 308 engine had the highest rated HP of any production 308, 175HP.0 -
Found this, and wanted to add to this thread:
