Brake Clutch Pedal Removal

I'm continuing to get deeper and deeper into my first restoration

IMG_2616.jpg

I am currently stuck in separating the brake and clutch pedals from the lever arms on the engine side. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

It was a bad day today in that I ruined the steering shaft trying to separate it from the steering wheel. I mushroomed it with a jury-rigged steering wheel puller. I will grind off the damaged area and will continue to try to separate them. The steering wheel is pretty bad, so I was going to replace it anyways.

How do you pull the steering column shaft from the stearing gear box?

I would like to remove the steering wheel off another '49 I have. Does anyone know of a source to rent a Hudson specific steering wheel puller?

Thanks much,

Bryan

I do not think any rental place will have the right puller you need.

You might check with Walt Mordenti. He might have one to sell. <<HETmmordenti@aol.com>> drop the HET. Or call 415-824-5222

You might just catch him before he leave for the Nationals.

    Good luck. Lee

You need a 2-jaw puller to push the clutch/brake pedals from the arms after you remove the nuts. They are serrated to keep them oriented. From 39 back, the arms are split into clamps with a bolt, which needs to be completely removed as the pedal shafts have a radius thru which the bolt goes to keep them from turning.

You need a split collar which will fit up inside the bottom of the steering wheel, with a flange to get a large 2-jaw puller on, which will push on the end of the shaft. The smaller diameter goes inside the wheel. Your local mechanic can turn one on a lathe and cut it in two. I've attached a pic of one half of the Hudson tool. Dimensions are

    ID 1 3/4.

    Small OD 2 3/32 x 3/8 long.

    Middle OD 2 13/32 x 3/8 long.

    Large OD 3 3/4 x 1/4 thick

    Total thickness is 1 inch

The tube will slide off after the wheel is off, and the clamp at the bottom is loosened.

The shaft will not separate from the steering box without taking the box apart. It goes out the bottom end after the end-plate is off, the arm has been pulled with a puller, and the cross-shaft is out. Easier to disconnect the drag link and remove the 3 mounting bolts and get the whole thing out on the bench.

Bryan, I'm assuming you're new to Hudsons (might be wrong!) but have you considered going through the H-E-T national roster to find if there are any owners of Hudsons similar to yours, near you? Some of these folks might be a good source of help / information / parts / specialty tools. Never hurts to phone around. In general, Hudson owners (being among a tiny minority of antique car owners) have developed amazing resourcefulness in solving problems, and are usually quite happy to help their fellow Hudson owners whenever possible. You never know; someone in the next county might have developed a technique (or put together a homemade tool) to do exactly what you need to do.
  • Bryan:

Your frustration is well understood. :(

Hudson Steering wheels are difficult to remove on a good day and using the right wheel puller is a MUST if you are to remove the wheel undamaged. Experience is speaking here... The following link will take you to a PDF sheet that is located on my Hudson Stepdown website. The page will provide you with a picture of the kit and it's adapters. The second sheet specifically addresses the removal of a 49 model steering wheel which should be of interest to you.

The second PDF sheet specifically addresses the removal of the pedals from the shaft. The sheet pictures the tool and explains its use.

Hope this will help.... Good Luck with your restoration. :)

  • Thanks all for the great advice.

I am getting the collar fabricated for the steering wheel puller.

Will let you know how it goes.
