50 Pacemaker Brougham, value.

I'm considering selling my 50A Deluxe Pacemaker Brougham and am wondering what you guys would value it at. Just a ball-park figure is what I'm looking for. I don't believe the prices in the NADA book.

The car has overdrive and a 54 engine that was bought in the seventies as a new engine. It is the stock bore so it is not a rebuilt. The car will run all day at 70mph with ease. It has a new Dodge radiator, new Diamond back wide whitewall radials, all new brakes including discs on the front. Radio works and I bought the Redi Rad so you can play an I-pod or a AM/FM radio through the original radio and speaker. New carpet, solid floors, trunk and frame. No signs of rust anywhere under the car. It has an amateur paint job, but looks OK from 20 feet. The bumpers have been rechromed but not the bumperguards as they were good. I drive this car or "ugly"the 51 every day. The steering box leaks a bit and I add to it about twice a year. The steering seems a bit harder than the 51, I had it aligned and they said it was fine. It had a hard spot at one point in the steering when I bought it several years ago, but has all but disappeared. It has a new dual exhaust system with the dual outlet adapter. That is all I can think of, but there probably is more. So what do you think I should expect to get? Thanks for and opinions. Richie.

I'll give you $3K for it. hehe

Seriously though. historically Pacemakers being the base models have not fetched much at all even in top condition especially a sedan 2 or 4 door. $7 - $10 K will ususally get you a very nice one. There's not a Hudson nut alive would you pay more than $15K for even a perfect one that knows what a Pacemaker is.

I would just keep that car and drive it if I was in your shoes and heck maybe while driving it you'd happen upon someone (non-HET guy) who would make you a reasonable offer.

I guess my opinion is just a bit different. I understand the idea that Hollywood's and Hornet's bring more and coupe's are twenty to thirty percent less than convertibles but here is my BAG (best A$$ guess): I consider your car (having never seen it???) as a number 2 car. Not a true restoration and not a hot rod. However, a really good looking representation of a Brougham (my experience tells me that Broughams are quite popular in todays market. The trade mag's would put it in the 12 to 14 K market value but I think they are going a bit more than that. I would price it at $18,000 and be willing to go down to around $16,000 for a sale. Our Hudson stepdowns are not doing that well on eBay so I would go for the HET club web site and publication and hit a bunch of car shows with a sign in the window.

    Just my humble opinion

Thanks SuperDave, I appreciate it. I may paint the ugly 51 the same color after about 5 years of knocking dents out of it. Richie.

Just remember that Hudson guys are cheap. Expose your car to non-hudson guys aswell.
  • Richie:

Sorry to hear you may part with the 50. I like it and the color, but I have a close one to yours except the year and OD and other stuff.

Will be putting the adapter on mine soon, floor board out and engine painted, most of the under hood stuff painted. The previous owner wanted $12k for mine, waited and gave less.

Hoped to come by before now, too hot and too much to do.

Will talk with others about your prize, later, Bob
  • Richie:

Your question concerning perceived value is subjective to most of those who would buy your car. You are understandably emotionally intertwined with this car and it will color what you think is a reasonable sale price.

In the 45+ years I have owned Hudsons I can offer one bit of advice on selling your car... find an emotional audience.

Lately I have seen a very positive response to Hudsons from the folks who are resurrecting old school hot rodding and rock a Billy type of gatherings. Some may say rat rodding, but I am speaking of the attendees who are grey at the temples and looking for a sleek low slung looking ride that is OEM powered. I could have sold my 53 Wasp 20 times the last time I had it at one of these events.

In the end it is your car... the audience with the longest green is attending the type of shows I described. Good Luck... and again Sweet short hood ride!!!

Bob, it is just a thought right now, my wife would rather have me sell the ugly 51. Really not sure right now, that is why I posted my comment here to help me decide. Send me a few pics of your progress when you get time. Talk to you later, Richie.

Thanks Ken, I haven't offered to sell it to anyone yet, not advertised yet. I like driving both cars and do drive one of them every day. I get lots of people that say, hey buddy want to sell that car, and my answer is always thanks but no. I do think the grey at the temples guys would be more apt to buy a Hudson than the younger crowd. Thanks, Richie.
