The water jacket cover has a plate inside that needs to have the right sized holes to ensure correct distribution of cooling water.
Somewhere, someone will have a template showing the correct layout.
Also I think someone was making stainless steel ones.0 -
Thanks for your remarks !!! I will be very interested to have more detailed info about this cooling manifold, to find an original one will be like impossible but I can get someone copy it maybe ?0
-
Right, an original T8, another "one-off" T8 item, you'd be VERY lucky to find, BUT might easily be able to find one for the '34-5 Hudson 8 engine which will bolt right on. You'd have to change the water tube on the outside of it, etc., but it'll be right for the car. The one on the engine photo I posted earlier is NOS - I'd found it 30+ years ago & kept it all this time knowing it's rarity.
You might contact the Railton Owners Club just over "the Channel" as think they may have had some made of stainless or even have a good used one on hand. I think their web site is railton.org & you'll see a "SPARES" caption at the top, explore that & see.
Also you might be able to find the water jacket cover for the '32-3 Hudson 8 engine, have to do the same thing - I have 2 of these, NOS, but can't sell 1 right now (deal pending to sell all my parts).0 -
checked for you, or anyone else, & yes, ROC has various water jackets avail., NORS of stainless for 195 pounds (have no idea how much that = in euros). they would have the water jacket to block gasket you'd need too.
I think ROC will sell the parts they have to non-ROC members. They have it set up as a "scheme" whereby profits generated go back into financing making other items. You'll see they have a 4 page list of stuff they have avail. which you might find very useful/helpful inc. valves, clutch items, & so on.0 -
Charlie Harris was selling stainless plates at OKC for the 212 & later 254 motor. The one for the 254 may fit or be able to be cut down?
Roger0 -
Yes Charlie, think the block bolt pattern the same all the way up.
The late 8s protrude out further & have the pipe on top of the jacket rather than coming out of the side so you'd have to cut the jacket & remove the upper pipe (have seen this done, not esthetically very nice) then cut it again to put the pipe in a lower position for the early cars = a lot of "messing around".
The T8 water jacket just like the '32-3 except the dia. of the pipe is smaller.0 -
Dorman used to make NORS water jackets for all manufacturers & at one time readily available, could find them in swap meets, all you had to know was the Norman # which they stamped on them & make sure they were for a Hudson.
I have, or had, a Norman products catalog & used to have their water jackets hanging off nails in my garage like bats, usually had 8 to 10 of them, now down to 3.
I haven't gone to a swap meet for a LONG time. Used to go to Hershey occasionally but last time I went cost a lot to get there from Calif. and there was practically nothing for Hudsons anymore (+ Weber always got there days before & would have "scarfed up" everything, LOL).0 -
I've tracked down two sets of used original headlight lenses for $US225/pair plus shipping. It's expensive, but then again these lenses are very hard to find! Not sure what others cars they fitted, someone may know which could make the search easier in future.
I'll probably take one pair, so you could take the other pair if you're interested. The vendor says they are the correct Stabilite lenses for the car.
He's almost out of the Terraplane Six lenses but I think these smaller lenses are used on other cars as well, so supply should be better.0 -
Thank you very much for all your help, I really appreciate !!:)
I still have a lot of work but I'm sure I will get there !;)
Thanks again !0 -
I Had several of the 8 cyl water jackets for sell at OKC Nat..only sold one!!! I had them priced at $140 ...These are NOS Dorman ,,one has the smaller T8 pipe, still have it. others are 34-35 8 cy with pipe coming out the side. Price still stands but would have to pay shipping..I think this price is about half price of the stainless ones, and they look right. RD0
-
right! 195 pounds = around $300 not counting shipping!
If I'd been there & seen it I would have bought it.0 -

ROC spares is quite good for the older models - they have used parts as well, for example I got a '36 water pump base off them second hand and they airmailed it to me at a reasonable price.
I suggest contacting them also for discussing how to repair your water pump. There is a lot of knowledge among the members and in fact it would be worthwhile joining up since you're quite close by and they do have members based in Europe too.0 -
right - I attach a pic of Cee's '37 H8 "Century", an English custom bodied car which he drives all over + he has a Railton too. Practically a "neighbor" of yours as he's in the Netherlands. He had the '37 shipped to the West coast last summer, drove it to Spokane then all the way across Canada, & had it shipped home from there. You can see the ROC car club badge on the front. He & his wife, shown in the picture, are really nice people!0 -

I'm after one part, the badge off the luggage rack.........anyone have a spare one or one they would be happy to lend for a pattern?
Same for me...
oldhudsons have you still got that badge, or was it someone you knew, can't remember which? What would it take to get a couple of castings made. Also the badge that fits in the casting, is that the same as the grille badge?
Would like to see an image of this mysterious luggage rack badge too!0 -

This is the current waterpump, I don't know where it comes from but I believe it's not original, what do you think ?
It does not leak but not sure it is efficient because the engine temperature tends to rise (leaking valves solved, water manifold to be tackled, waterpump  ) The ignition adjustment can also be part of it and as far as I've seen, the job done before is not really accurate...:(

correct, NOT the right water pump.
Yes, think replacing that plate with a proper water jacket can help with cooling problems. Be sure & clean out the block behind the water plate after removal, may be a lot of "crud" built up & adhering to the block thus decreasing the effect of the water in cooling it.
When you have the block (and radiator) clean I'd suggest adding "water soluable oil" to the water. It will prevent rust in the future building up. It is avail. here in auto parts stores.
You should check the timing certainly + while you're at it, I'd check the valves for proper clearance.
I'd also run a compression check when you get it running again, make sure valves in good condition.
As I recall your T8 has pretty low mileage. If "up to snuff" it will be a lively performer for it's age.0 -
Valves have been regrinded and valve clearance are readjustes as well. According to the online library, it has to be done engine warm so I add a little bit more clearance but I will check it once more as soon as the engine is running again
I'm lucky : the radiator is rebuilt, no dirt inside the head apparently !
I found a 'strange tool' from my dad in the garage, exactly what is needed to remove these flat head valves, easy !
I hope this water pump will make it as to find another one will be a hard fight...0 -
that's great, sounds like you know what you're doing (unlike others who sometimes come to this website & don't know, or even worse, don't care).
Yes, those are a great tool for valve removal.
Ivan used to visit this website - in the last year or so has bought 2 '33 T8s & a lot of parts too but don't know if he'd have a spare water pump.
I'm going to a meet in so. Calif. middle of next month - he's coming along with guy handling stuff from estate of old friend who recently died who also had 2 '33 T8s & a LOT of parts. If you get one in the meantime post accordingly in here, otherwise will see if can "dig one up" for you.0 -
Earlier this year, there was a T8 for sale on ebay.com, the guy had lots of spares and several water pumps but lost his email...
it was this car :
Maybe someone knows this person ?
Thanks Oldhudsons for all your help !
if you find one for me please do not hesitate ! the chance I find one around here are zero anyway ! In case I find one I will let you know !0 -
It looks like the one I sold Zach, only had about 32K orig. miles, which he restored from excellent original, but he sold it a year or 2 ago & I don't know to whom. It was originally all black but he had it repainted to that color scheme.
Got an e-mail address this a.m. I'll follow up on, the guy handling the estate; if he's got one will send his address to you.
You're more than welcome.0 -
Terraplane 33 -I contacted David Putnam who currently keeps the registry. It would be worth emailing him to see if you car is registered. PM me for his email address.
Also, my dads engine is complete and disassembled at the moment, so I can provide pics or details of the water jacket, water pump etc.
Not to hijack the thread, but aircleaner I have needs a new filter. Whats inside now looks like water damaged cardboard. Has anyone successfully cracked one of these open?
Matt0 -
nice to know these registrys are still being kept0
