I probably paid too much for this but what the hey. It has a 1948 Commodore on it which is why I wanted it. Anyone know what these were about? Maybe a Hudson jingle for radio advertising? Niels

    Niels,

That's awesome. I wonder the same thing. Would love to know what the song sounded like.

That was their ad slogan at the time. I have a postcard advert and a lapel button with "This time it's Hudson" from the same period. It would be interesting to actually hear the song, maybe it was used on radio and TV?

PS, I've seen an old TV clip of the Andrews Sisters singing:

"Longer...Lower...Wider...the 49 Hudson is the car for you"

Someone in the Club belonged to a small singing group in the midwest, and several years ago just for fun they recorded the song on tape, along with some better-known songs. Maybe someone will recall that person's name.

The "Andrews Sisters" clip was from a 1966 Volkswagen TV commercial called "The 1949 Auto Show" -- as far as I know, it was merely the fabrication of Bob Kuperman of the ad agency Doyle Dane Bernbach.
  • Jon,

Thanks for jogging my memory re the “Andrews Sisters”, now I remember the VW ad. If it was a reenactment it was pretty well done, with the “Sisters” singing in front of a ‘49 sedan as I recall.
  • Niels,

if you're handy with a piano maybe you can record a version for us. I am sure we would all apppreciate you singing the song for us now that you have the music.

The only one that I would put thru that torture would be my ex-wife or a clerk at the local DMV...

Seriously though, my neighbor is a professional singer and plays the piano so I am going to ask her to record it. Should be interesting. I was thinking that I could then put it on a phone answering machine and you guys could simply call the phone number to hear it. Niels

I don't think you paid too much - I'd think these would be pretty rare to come by...
  • Jon, The reference to the jingle for the VW ad was correct, but the year wasn't. I well remember the ad and the affiliated Time magazine ad featuring several B&W photos of various cars from 1949 like Packard, DeSoto and Hudson asking the question"Where are they all now?". Well I've got one for them where are all your beatles now?!!!! This ad in print featuring the jingle and B&W print was from 1970.

The price you paid is about right. There were 2 editions of the sheet music. The one you won is the 2nd edition. They are the more common of the 2. However the price does not change drastically for the 1st version. You would pay about $50.00 for the 1st and $40.00 for the 2nd edition.

I have 1 of the 1st edition and 2 of the 2nd. Probably should sell the other 2nd edition. Hmmm.
  • Neils,

seeing as you have the music already and if you have a barn I will come down and we can put on a musical. I am sure some of the other folk on here will join in. Think of it as Wizard of Oz meets Rent. LOL people will pay big bucks to see this I am certain.
  • I got the sheet music in the mail. Here are the words to the radio jingle- it is for the introduction of the new 1948 Hudson Stepdown.... The title is "This time it's Hudson". Words and music by Harry Gaines Copyrighted 1947

Have you heard about the new sensation. Have you read about the new creation. The Hudson Automobile. Just get behind the wheel! Wanna drive wanna drive a Hudson Automobile--- brand new six or eight. Like to ride! like to ride a Hudson Automobile---- I love that car, it's great! For I've had cars---- from A to Z. Now I vow--- Hudson is my specialty. Now let me drive a Hudson Automobile. The best! in the U.S.A. you'll see! This time it's "HUDSON" for me. Wanna me.

by the way, I'm setting these lyrics to the music of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show". Should be available on CD just in time for X-mas (LOL)! Niels
  • American Idol is coming up I may audition singing this song. Then when Simon says I'm crap I will give him a lesson Hudson style........I'll be swinging wildly before security get to me all the while shouting "This Time Its Hudson"
  • I have most of the 16 inch discs Wilding produced for Hudson's sales team. I also have all of the film reels that go with them. When I get time I am going to transfer the whole lot to DVD. I have boxes of Hudson original Lit I am going through and when I get more ready I will be uploading it to my website so If I get hit by a brand X the info will survive.
  • That Met DVD looks pretty nice.

I have also looked for the Hudson radio spots but have not found them yet. I have all of the other brand Radio commercials. I don't know why they have not appeared yet.

I had not heard of the "This Time Its Hudson" recording but I will put out some feelers to see if any of my radio historian friends have.
  • This is funny timing.... my "singing" neighbors were over last night having a few cocktails (5 or 6) and I showed them the music. My brother scanned the music and gave them a copy. Since they are involved in music, they have a friend with a studio who they are going to ask to record the music. I'm told it is a real "Swing" type beat. My neighbors thought it was so cool to see a Hudson Jingle and were excited to hear it (I'm sure the alcohol helped). Niels
  • They have promised me a CD. I see them almost every day so i'll bug 'em until they comply.... Niels
  • There is always Rock Hudson and his rendition of "Pillow Talk" but I guess that doesn't count. LOL Niels

I love neat finds like this! I mostly play trumpet, but just had a vintage piano brought into my home this weekend. So, I'm curious to learn more about this jingle!

Yesterday I received an email from a friend who collects a ton of old radio commercials. He said he had never seen nor heard of any Hudson radio commercials.

Can some of you Hudson veterans recall ever hearing Hudsons advertised on the radio? Did they ever sponsor any radio shows besides "B.A. Rolfe and His Terraplane Orchestra" in the 1930s?

My son listens to late night radio programs from the 40's and 50's that a local radio station airs. He mentioned recently he was listening to an ad for a 1954 hudson wasp which he found interesting as that is what I drive.
  • Jim ask him what radio show he heard that in? I may have it and can listen to it.
  • Sean he's not sure which exact show but he listens to QR770 out of calgary after midnight and they play all those "cliff hanger" radio shows about detectives and police with a narrator and sound effects etc.
  • I am 6 years late, but I do have an answer to the Hudson sheet music. I have the recording of it, 3 different versions, plus copies of the sheet music. Harry Gaines wrote it, and I don't know if it ever aired on radio or not. He also wrote advertising jingles for the Nash and Chevrolet back in the 40's or 50's, and lots of other songs as well.
  • Cool. Thanks for the response. I think there is a guy selling a CD of this in the back of the WTN.
There is a first and second edition of this sheet music. The 1st edition does not have the new 1948 Stepdown on the cover. The second edition does.
  • I have no idea what a WTN is, nor know much about cars (I joined here so I could respond to this post about the sheet music), but if you'd like to get a jpg of the cover of the sheet music I have (or the entire song), I can email it. Better yet, if you want to hear the actual recordings of the songs, I can also email the mp3s I made from the 78 rpm records. Harry Gaines was my grandfather, and he passed away in 1971 or 72.

I have an original copy my grandfather (Harry Gaines) was provided of "This Time It's Hudson", on acetate (or vinyl) 7", 78RPM speed, and sheet music. I am sure glad I googled "Harry Gaines radio ad" and found this forum. I didn't think anything would come up.

Great tune! I have it as my ringtone on my cell phone. Got to listen to the song often when I was helping Ken Poynter with his video, 'Hudson Motor Car Company - The Men, the Automobiles and the Company' produced for the National in Pontiac. I have a great video clip of the Hudson factory in 1934 using that song as a background. I just can't figure out how to post it on this site.

  • Here is the sheet music cover, 2nd edition, which shows the car.
