How does this mount?

I just recently learned that this is a cover for the pitman arm and somehow mounts around the bottom of the frame on a step-down. Does anyone have a picture or can describe how it mounts? Can't quite figure out it's orientation.

  • Thats the cover for the master cylinder - more accuratly . The bolts screw right into frame. So look back a little farther than the pitman arm,

  • And if I'm not mistaken those big holes are for greasing the brake / clutch shaft,

Thanks, Roger, what's the big slot for?
  • I would have to go look under a car but I think thats where th brake line comes out of master cylinder. But dont quote me on that for sure ,

  • Im looking at a 51 manual here and it does show a cover like that sitting on crossmember covering drag link.

  • If you have a owners manual with a lube chart look there to see bottom views

O.k., I found a lube chart and I see it on there. Thanks, that should help, I'll try to see exactly how it mounts tomorrow. I understand these were just in the way for the mechanic and were often removed for servicing and promptly thrown away.
  • Yes there are very few of them still on the cars. Would be an easy item to make if you realy wanted to have one. And with the six having distributor cap on that side I suppose it keeps some splashing water away. Sorry my recollection was off by a foot,

It's purpose was to keep rocks from getting caught in the brake linkage on gravel roads.. which were many in the 40-50's..

Well, I can pretty much guarantee I won't be on any gravel roads, but I still think it's pretty cool that I have the original one that came with the car.
