What is the largest 15 in. radial you can run safely on a stepdown, using orignal rims.

I have been using P-225 R-70-15 ON MY 51 Super-6 for the past 15 years and they are about all that will fit on the rear. ( will drag the inner well a little when jacked up all the way when removing from the brake drum) They also fit the Hudson Rims . R.B.

I was told 235 75 R15 on the stock rims is the widest you can go.

I was originally planning on using the stock rims on my Hudson
    1. To Keep it as "Hudson" as possible even though it's a custom
    2. Save some friggin money!
But, my original wheels are riveted construction not welded. For mamby-pamby-grocery-getting-driving this would be fine.

Since mine is going to be a daily driver and will be going for some long haul drives as well my thinking is that the extra flex that a radial tire would have may not hold up. I think I'll now go with some welded steel wheels from a later model car that will still fit within the stock confines and at least hold a 235-75

    - although I've been thinking of

235-75R15 Coker Classics on my 49 C8. Fit fine with no issues. But then

I haven't had to pull one off the rear yet. But I think if there that tight

there would be some signs of scratches on the inside of the rim and there

    are none.

What fits is different from what is easy to change on the road. We run P-225 R-70-15 on both of ours and they fit fine but they are a real pain in the a** to remove in any situation where you can't raise the car well off the ground. Like might be the case with a bumper jack. I'd go a little skinnier if I had to do it over.

I'm running 215-75 R 15s on the 49 Commadore which are the replacement size for the original 710s They look and handle great.

I even used take-off blackwalls and painted them with Latex house paint. People don't know unless I tell em, and I saved a bundle.
