My new 54 Hornet coupe (thanks Lee) is an original lipstick red car with a green interior (weird aint it?), anyway I've never found a paint chip for lipstick red. Anybody know a modern paint code to come close? I also find myself in need of a 54 power brake pedal pad for my other club coupe

Hi Chris When I had our 54 hollywood painted I phoned Charlie Regenerous sorry about the spelling but he passed away . He was the paint adviser for the Hudson club. He sent the paint mixing for the closest lipstick red. He called it medium scarlet red tinted. It is PPG numbers.
If interested pm me. PS I also have numbers for corination cream. now called pastel ivory.

Brownie, Here is a picture where it sat for decades I'd say since the tags expired in 1984
There are a couple clues to whats under the hood and why I jumped on this one.Photobucket

Let me quess Chris. Since the trunk is open are clues there? Could it be the oil cans and coil springs.? Funning aside, how is the restoration progressing?

Lee, Kelly won't let me touch the new one until I get my original 54 on the road. She gives me grief if I even gaze at it too long. You know the drill, happy wife happy life

Sweet Car... I guess George was big into custom plates? What did you see under the hood? Are we talking racing stuff like the plates say? Love the Chrome wires shown in the trunk, I would guess that you have them all around? Too early to say anymore about mine because I have a lot to do before I fire her up. I have been collecting some parts locally (Glen Johnson is always a great resource. I'll let you know when I fire it up.

It does have five motorwheel lip lace wires. Under the hood is a no kidding real factory 7x engine with all the proper pieces in place. Nothing aftermarket that I see. The twin exhaust pipes are a clue in the picture. 232 studded head and the block number indicates that it was made on the custom assembly line. No dents and only surface rust from cheap primer paint. If I can believe it, the odometer says 30k. It looks like the guy parked it 30 years ago, pulled off most of the trim, primer painted it and let it set to slowly sink into the ground. I found all of the unobtainium trim parts so Im good to go when ready. I plan on pulling the pan and cleaning it out then rebuilding the carburetors and cleaning the gas tank before I think about starting it.PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Chris, I guess George like race cars. The one that I have, as I have mentioned before, was raced before George bought it. I would guess that he put my car out to "bake in the sun" when he ran across your car with all the high performance goodies. By the way, does your car have traction bars on the back. Mine does and also has a cut out down by the bottom of the fire wall. I continued cleaning the car today and found that George had put axel grease on the interior bright work as well. I cleaned off the glove box and ash tray (I even found a lighter in the ash tray) and found that the chrome is just like new. since I plan to do the "lipstick red" thing I will wait to clean off the rest when I strip to paint the dash. I know it is good for now. I also stopped by the paint shop today and they do not have mix formulas that will work for the old colors. The base color has changed too much over the years. I forgot to take the 70 T Bird data down so I have another reason to visit. I may just pick a modern red that looks close and go with it? I pulled the radiator today and took it down and plan to do the gas tank later this week. Need to rest a bit? Well, that is most likely more than anyone wants to read so I will stop with this....

Brownie, Yes it does have traction bars. I wonder if he had Shelby American make them when they were at the Torrance airport. They look just like the ones gt350 Mustangs had on them. I also have a 63.5 Galaxie 500xl with the same looking traction bars. I know it was an orignal lipstick red because the firewall is that color and places where the primer has chipped its red. No grease on this one because he took most of the trim off. The Sherlock Holmes in me thinks he never intended to have it sit so long and it was the car closest to the front driveway.

Chris & Brownie, to say I am jealous of your cars is an understatement. Awesome to see these cars brought back, nice job jumping on these.

I have been able to find most all the parts that were missing from my car with the exception of the "Special" chrome trim on the passenger side and the small trim part where the radio tip clips into the bottom of the windshield. I am going to my interior shop this morning to talk to him about how we are going to do the seats and stuff. I expect that it will be next to impossible to find the correct wool to match the red "faux leather" so I guess I will go with "close" and call it good. My car was the cream color. The firewall and other areas like the trunk still show signs of the original paint job. Right now my plan is to have the top that original color.
