Brake Drums, 53 Hudson Hornet

Are the rear brake drums removed together with the hub assembly of separately?

  • As far as I know, they are integral, and removed together.  Are you having a problem?  If so, are you using the correct brake drum puller?

  • The drums are solid riveted to the hub and the hub is a taper fit onto the axle, it can be very tight. You need a good quality puller like the one in the photo.

The poor man's method of hub loosening, assuming the car is still mobile, is to slacken the axle nut by 2 turns, put the split pin back in and drive around the block a couple of times.
  • All, thanks for the information I just ordered a heavy duty hub/drum puller.

You really won't regret the purchase.  Money well spent and it's the right tool for the job.  Always a plus.
  • ....and if other old-car guys in your neighborhood find out you have it, you'll be amazed at how many new friends you have, LOL!
  • You might loosen the nut and spray some penetrating oil on the axle in the hub the day before you want to remove the drums.

I spent a day pounding on the pullers dog bone to remove right rear without penetrating oil. That evening I sprayed penetrating oil on both axles. Next morning the right hub popped loose easily with a few licks with one pound hammer and the left side came off easily with a few hits. .They can be very stubborn to get off. Don't forget to leave the nut on the axle so the hub/drum doesn't come flying off into private area when it lets go.
