35 Terraplane transmission issues
My 35 Terraplane has had transmission noise since I bought it last spring. I switched oil to Royal Purple which helped for awhile but I noticed that I was getting some brass colored metal flakes in the oil. This fall it started to jump out of second gear under load. I decided to pull the transmission this winter to see what was going on. I am glad I did, the input shaft has a bunch of play in it and the 1st gear has wear (see photo 918)
While under the car I removed the driveline (propeller shaft) and found what might be a cause of some of the issues. The U joints were not timed or indexed correctly. See photos 916 and 917. Whoever worked on the car missed a couple splines when they put it back together. According to my manuals there is an arrow on the yoke and a line punched on the splines to show were it should be assembled but I could only find the arrow. As long as I index the joints like a current driveline will that work? I cannot imagine Hudson doing it any other way but I thought I should ask you folks to make sure.
Are the rebuild parts for these transmissions still available or do I need to find a used one somewhere that I hope is in better condition?
Thanks,
Mike

There are actually NOS gears here and there, but you'll have to sent out an e-mail "broadcast" to several of the Hudson vendors who advertise in the WTN. Be sure to include part number, and maybe even a photo of the gear or component you need, along with some dimensions. These parts may be laying around some guy's stash and he has no idea what they fit without some dimensions or a part number.
One supplier would be Gene & Myrna Eshelman, they purchased the entire stock of a Hudson dealer in Portland, Oregon (or was it Seattle, Wash.?) and I seem to recall a lot of transmission parts being for sale!
PS -- I'm moving this to the HUDSON section. It really doesn't belong in the OFF TOPIC section.

Thanks Jon,
I wasn't sure where it was supposed to be posted.
I did get out my WTN to see what might be out there. I may check with some of the venders to see if it might be better to bite the bullet and send it to a repair shop.
I see in the WTN that Gene and Myrna are in Weiser, Idaho. Their add does not mention transmission parts so that is a great lead.----- much appreciated.

Be very careful that you only send it someone who understands these particular transmissions - they are a one-off Hudson box, and will surely be stuffed up by anyone who doesn't know what they are doing. Ask "Have you done Hudson transmissions before, and do you have the necessary repair manual". If the answer is no, walk away.0

Geoff,
I took your advice about having someone who is knowledgeable about these transmissions rebuild mine and sent my transmission to Dr. Doug. As long as I am in this far I also am "biting the bullet" and having Wildrick's rebuild the clutch.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike-Andy there at the shop has re-built many of the 30's transmissions, '35 included and has become very knowledgeable with them. Of course, their clutch work is Cracker Jack. I think you made a wise decision.0

I received my rebuilt transmission and clutch assembly from Wildricks Restoration this afternoon. I have been looking in the HET library for specs on torque for the flywheel bolts as well as the pressure plate bolts and cannot find anything. What do you guys recommend?
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Geoff,
And thank you for the great article in the last WTN.
