Alternator diode

I was told that I probably need to put a diode on my alternator to stop a battery leak. What's the advantage of installing a diode? I've seen it mentioned on a website somewhere.

    Some times when using an alternator in place of a generator, the engine will continue to run, after the ignition switch is cut off. this is because of feedback from the alt., to the switch. JC Whitney sells a diode that you mount into the system which prevents the engine from continuing to run. Speedway Motors....<speedwaymotors.com>..
