Valve guide replacement
Does anyone have a suggestion, besides going to the machine shop, on pulling an old exhaust valve guide and installing a new one on a big six? I pulled it apart to install the new head and intake but had a dead mis. Found #6 valve burnt and bent. Rest of the engine is good and still in the car. Any tips would be appreciated. ‘53 Hornet.

The guides are brittle when struck from the side. A friend of mine and I used a guide driving tool, that looks like a center punch, to drive the guide deeper into the block. Then we hit the side of the guide with a chisel and it broke off easily. We finished by driving the remaining guide through and cleaned up the debris. The replacement guide was driven in with the same tool. Depth was measured against another guide of the same valve type.

Try to isolate the area around the bad guide with a cloth or something to restrict debris.

You are lucky if only one needs replacing. I wire brush cleaned my guides and turned up a rod on the lathe to the max allowed clearance diam to check the wear in all guides. Wear is usually oval so its hard to measure accurately. New guides are cheap and don't take long to replace them all, after the first one.

Thank you guys, this helps a bunch. I was hoping maybe I can save one from a donor block I have. This car doesn’t use oil and the little that it does is insignificant for now. I want to use my resources and future money to a full rebuild on another 308. Just need to buy one guide if anyone has one they want to sell me.

Lance: I am posting a Video URL where Larry Cramer shows how to pull a valve guide from a block. The Hornet process is the same.

Well I finally got the old guide out today and the new guide, Thank you Gert!!, and a new seat installed. I was unsuccessful pulling the guide, it crumbled itself but the rest stayed in the block. I pulled two different pieces of SS all-thread w long coupling nuts in half. Even tried my impact gun, no dice. So I loaded the car on the trailer and took it to my friends machine shop. All that was done in about 45mins. Then I had him dress all of the other seats and valves. Now it’s back home and I’ll start the assembly process along w the new head and twin 2bbl intake from Dan. Turns out this engine and Hydro were worked over by Clifford back in the ‘70s, bored .060 over, unknown other internal mods.
Heres a sneak peek at the look.
