STEPDOWN REAR OUTER SEALS
I have a question on rear, outer seals for my 1950 Pacemaker.
With out measuring specs, I ordered National 471831 seal indicated for the end-cap application on my rear axle. Spec is 1.750X2.441X0.375, which is consistent with cross-reference parts, so I assume it is correct.
However, the seal inner diameter is too large for my spindle, which I measured at 1.288[+-], where the lip would normally ride. Does the part seal against the wheel bearing horizontally somehow? Does the taper bearing apply pressure against the seal with rotation? Do I have the wrong part?
Hoping to get it right the first time, and am grateful for any answers and experiences from other club members.

The seal DOES NOT ride on the spindle as you refer to it (it actually is the tapered end of the axle shaft) It rides on the 1-3/4" (1.750") diameter of the machined hub that is riveted to the brake drum! Is the rear wheel bearing in good shape and well greased? These Timken / SKF 25877T bearings are a special tapered bore roller bearing that is hard to source. I have these on hand.

Yes, CR 17310 and National 43071S are the correct seals for all Hudson Stepdowns 1948-54. National National 471831 will not work as it is too thick at 0.375"

Ken, thanks for the quick response. Of course it makes sense now, that the seal would ride on a different surface from the axle: the hub inner fitment. Duh. I must have had the wrong size seal installed as there was oil/grease in the brake area, and the different thickness is the first thing I am looking at. Thanks for the correct part numbers; I have them on the way.
My bearings are still good as they are almost new, and well lubed from the zerk fitting. It is good to know that these parts are still available.
Best, David
