My 2 prong flasher on my 54 Hornet failed. Can I use a 3 prong flasher, and what is the third prong for?

The third prong is for when there is only a single light on the dash to show the indicator is on., so yes, you can use a three prong unit, just don't use the third one.

    Thanks, Geoff

  • John, I had flasher issues after putting LED bulbs. I ended up replacing the front bulbs with the old ones and no more issues. The LED’s don’t draw enough current to trip the flasher. I had this problem before on others and even tried the electronic flasher. I ended up putting two little pilot lights on the dash and then everything worked.

Flashers are a bi-metal mechanism that relies on a given resistance to work, which is usually a 18 to 21 Watt bulb. If you want extra bright flashers, use l.e.d.'s in parallel with the bulbs. For 6 volt you will need a 180 ohm resistor in line with a couple of extra-bright l.e.d.s.
