You either have a short or the brushes in the generator are shot. You might just need new brushes.0

In addition to what Harry said you might also want to test the voltage regulator. Yours should be a 45-57 amp model used on 52-54 stepdowns.0

Start the car and hook up a volt meter across the battery. I should be reading over 6V if the generator is working. If not take it to you local rebuilder and he can check the rest.

Brushes for a generator are really cheap, and easy to replace, and it's a quick job!0
