question for hydramatic experts

  • I would say you got a problem as a Hydro. will always move in low as that is totally mechanical and if you got a HASH that should have a dual range which does not have the reverse pawl.?
  • I'm beginning to think Ol Fred has a cruel streak in him, I called and made an appointment to drop off the Hash and he gave me another project until I can get it in. He told me there is a big plug on top of the trans on the drivers side I should pull, it is the pressure regulator and he says it's probably stuck. He tells me it's hard to get to on your back ( what other position is there?) but I should pull the plug and pull on the spring. If it doesn't come right out the valve is stuck open and needs to be pulled out and cleaned, then when I get it back together, or if I get it back together, the trans should work. I may try that but it might be better to wait for Tuesday to get here.

  • Harry,

    I'd say you've done enough. However, what have you got to loose? It's not like you're going to make it worse than it is.
  • Dave;

    it might not make the tranny worse but I'm not so sure about my sanity. If I can't see the plug I'm not so sure I want to pull it out when I still have to put it back in. It doesn't matter, I won't have any time the rest of this week and Fred can see it on Tuesday. Heck, it might take me until Tuesday just to get the plug back in. I think I'll just wait and let Fred do his magic. If I feel the need to suffer I'll just go out back and let one of the mules kick me, at least that way I'll still have good feelings about the Hash when it's over.

  • Harry,

    You might as well let Fred do it and earn his pay. Besides, we don't need you to go crazy and drive the Hash down the street. It might give the rest of us a bad name. LOL I say take a well deserved break, have a cold drink and go kill some spiders. Mules...did you say mules? That's it Harry! Hitch up the mules to the Hash and have them pull it to Fred's. No, come to think of it, that might look bad too.

    I'm looking forward to hear what Fred finds when he opens up the trans.

  • Dave;

    my shops mechanic used to work for some local car dealers and he was telling about this great tranny guy they always went to because he didn't pad his bills or do unnecessary work, turns out he was talking about Fred. I feel good waiting to let Fred make my car whole, I'm guessing he'll find that pressure valve stuck from the sludge I've knocked loose with everything I've been doing. At least I'm pretty sure when he's done I won't have to worry about the transmission giving me any problems.

  • Well folks, I had a little time to look under the hood this evening after work, I knew I didn't have much time but I could see the pressure relief valve and I think if I lay across the starter head first I can get it out, don't know if I'll ever get it back in but if I don't then Fred can. I'm feeling pretty positive about this right now but then again, it's ten at night, I'm not lying under the car and these jobs always seem doable when I'm sitting on the couch typing out my plans. If work is slow tomorrow I may try to get that plug out of there, I hope it's a threaded fitting, and I don't pass out from having my feet higher than my head while I'm stretched out in the engine compartment.

  • Harry,

    If possible, please post pictures of you standing on your head under the hood of the Hash. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Who knows, it may even make it on the cover of the next WTN.
  • Dave;

    I could, and I could wear my mechanics short shorts, you know, the ones that expose your cheeks but have loops for your wrenches, but it's possible women and children might happen upon that picture, that might be a bit disturbing for young children but worst yet is all you guys would be mad at me when your wives posted my picture up in their sewing rooms.Nope,it's not worth the risk of losing you all as friends so no pictures.

  • The hydros that didn't have a drain plug, you unscrewed the filler pipe and drained it from there. Wouldn't get all of it but 1/2 quarts easier to deal with than 5 qts!
  • Steve;

    even with a drain plug there was too much oil to deal with when I dropped the pan. I know that since the 60's I've seen more transmission pans without drains than with. Now I have a drip at the pan gasket I can't figure out, it could be the filler pipe though, that is hard to get tight when you're on your back, once it's up on a rack I'll be able to get it tighter. It was a long day at work today so I didn't get a chance to pull the pressure plug today. I hope to get back at it tomorrow.

  • Okay folks, the Hash is on the rack, I was totally surprised to find out I had gotten it back together correctly, I thought for sure they would find the filter harpooned by the pick up tube. The pressure relief valve was working correctly but the solenoid that operates the bands was blown. If that is all that is wrong I will get out of this relatively cheaply. If the bands are gone the price will start going up rapidly. With only 79000 original miles on the car I can't imagine the bands being shot but I won't know until they test the solenoid. Hopefully I'll know more tomorrow.

  • Well, heres the latest on the hydra-matic. It had a heart attack, at least according to Fred the pump blew up, he says in a hydra that's a heart attack. It seems someone had been into this tranny in the past and put it back together incorrectly, in place of a big fat spring clip they put on two thin spring clips, one of which came off and contributed to pump dying. Vanes are gone off the pump from incidental contact with something. At any rate he will call me Monday with the cost of the repairs. When he's done I'll have a perfect tranny so it's all okay, I'll just be alot poorer in the end. Now I'm beginning to understand why I got such a great deal. I'll still be ahead in the end but not near as far ahead as I thought I was.

  • Here's another update, the planetary gear is broken, the back motor mounts are shot and the U-joint needs to be replaced. I don't know how this thing was moving on it's own. It was moving fine until I shut it down to rebuild the carbs and repair the manifold leaks. Once I fired it up the tranny was finished. I put in a call to Bill A for the U-joint and motor mounts, Fred thinks he has a planetary gear, I still don't know what the total cost is going to be.
