Gotta get these rear drums off!
Hello again, Dave Kostansek told me that in order to remove them I need a special puller that screws onto the threads that the hubcap screws onto and I imagine there's a center shaft that pushes down onto the axel and thereby pulling the drum off. Trouble is, I don't have one of these and, where in heaven would I get one? So seeing that I may never obtain one, is there anyone out there that came across this problem that might be able to help me. Is there another means of removing the drums? Unless someone will loan or rent the real thing to me I'm up for other ideas or maybe someone out there has the answer for me. Once again I'm in debt to anyones help. I've restored other cars before but, they were new compared to my 28 roadster and, each turn in it's restoration, (merely getting it running and driving), has presented a new challenge as I'm sure lots of you already know. Anybody been through this? I reeaaally would appreciate some help. I don't want to ruin these wood spokes. Thanks to all, Phil

Where are you located, Phil? Some folks who have '28's, do have these pullers and might be willing to lend them out, especially if you were willing to give them some sort of deposit. (Generally, Hudson folks are apt to loan stuff for free to their friends, but if they don't yet know you....well...you get the picture!)
I do have a friend with a '29, who looked in vain for such a device and ultimately had to make one himself -- but I can tell you that his won't work on yours, 1929 is apparently a different diameter from 1928!0 -
Phil, you may be able to get one made pretty easily. If you know or have a good machinist that you can work with. Paul O'Neil lent me his for my 29. It is basically a plate with three bolts in it and a threaded hole that matches your axel cap thread in the middle. I had to make an adapter because three bolts did not line up with the puller.
If you haven't joined the 16-29 group on Yahoo then you need to. Here is a picture of Paul's puller plate mated with a normal three hole axel puller you can rent from any parts store that has a tool loan program. (you may have to join the yahoo group to view).0 -
I am a member of the site and I can't pull it up, huh.
Hopefully this comes through. I send you a bigger picture if you want: HETankcoop@gmail.comHET (remove the HETs)

The 1928 hub is the same thread as the '24 - '29 Essex, so there must be someone out there with the correct puller. I have one here, but the cost of postage to and from New Zealand, you could probably get one machined. Any good machine shop will be able to this in less than an hour. It needs an internal thread to screw over the hub cap portion of the wheel, and a 1" fine-thread bolt in the centre to go against the end of the axle. The one illustrated in the previous post means you have to remove the three wheel bolts, and this makes it hard to not damage the paint.

I have such a puller in my inventory of obsolete tools and pullers, but I don't know what it fits. If someone would post the threads per inch and the diameter of the Hudson(S) hub(s), I will check mine and see if it fits an HET product. If it fits , I'll sell cheap, just to see it used again by an HET owner. My oldest Hudson is a 49 and I doubt I will ever have an earlier one. (Until i sell the puller LOL.)0

Hudson bolt circle is 4 1/2 diameter. Lug bolts are 1/2-13 but I suspect you have the older type puller.
You can make a puller from an old Chrysler products drum, some long 1/2-13 bolts and a large, maybe 5/8 or 3/4 fine-thread grade 8 bolt and nut for the center pusher. Tack weld the nut on the outside of the drum, reverse the whole thing, run the bolts thru into the Hudson hub, run the big screw in and have at it. I'd grind a tit (projection) on the end of the big screw to go into the center drilled hole in the axle.0 -
Geoff, the three bolts are only on the plate to hold the other puller. The only thing attached to the wheel is the plate screwed onto the axel cap threads. There was no removal of any wheel bolts. Ironically for me, I had Paul ship me his puller, welded that angled piece so I could bold on that standard puller and THEN when I threaded the hammer bar into the center thread, it actually started pulling the wheel off. I could have pulled my wheels off with a quick jerk!!! Just like SuperDave, if I hadn't gone to all that work, my luck would have mandated they be stuck on the axel.0

I saw a puller on ebay a while back but didn't win it. I did save the picture so that I can make one sometime. I can email the picture. Some time ago on this forum, I think, someone suggested another way to get them loose and that was to loosen the axle nuts a few turns and drive around the block. I have not tried it but good luck.

You can still see the puller on ebay even thought it's ended at:

That is a quick and sure way to loosen the wheel, but if the car is not mobile it is not an option.

Phil,
I tought I would bump this back to the top of the list. I do have a puller as you described and have no use for it. The question remains, is it the one you need? let me know the diameter of the hub cap thread and the number of threads per inch and I'll dig mine out of the pile. if you can use it, i'll give it to you for the cost of postage only.

Pat,
I just went out to the barn and measured the puller. The inside diameter measures 2 3/8" I could be off 1/16". It is 16 TPI. Much heavier duty than the one shown on ebay. It has "ears" that can be hammered to rotate the inner bolt. The insert that is threaded appears to be interchangeable. In other words, The threaded insert is threaded into the puller. It no doubt was part of a set with several different inserts. Unfortunately I only have the one insert that is in it. Maybe someone knows what this one fits Or an insert could be made and this one unscrewed? The offer still stands if you can make use of it.

!'d like to give it a try. I will send it back to you if It doesn't work. Shall I or will you find out how much to ship? Should I give you my address here or in a private message? I got the motor running very well and am working on the brakes and tires. I would like to get this baby on the road and the rear drums are my obsticle. I am working on posting some pictures. so you'll see them soon. I don't know if you know it but, this car is pictured on page 114 in Don Butlers (History of Hudson) &75k original mi. Let me know what you'd like to do. Thankful in jersey. Phil0

Geoff,
This should be right up your alley. Any idea if this 2 3/8 X16 puller fits any HET product?
I do have a couple pictures to email if anyone wants to see it.
