I think the wide block 308 crankshaft is internally balanced via counter-weights (?), so

for a dynamic-balance of full rotating assy,

1) will it include the crankshaft, bob-weight, harmonic balancer and flywheel, OR

2) just spin the crankshaft and balance it as a unit; plus balance all pistons and rods to equal weights

thanks

Go with 2. Harmonic balancer and flywheel are each balanced separately.
  • Every part in a Hudson engine was balanced separately, crank, rods, pistons, valves, cam, bearings, you name it and that is why you can change a crankshaft, and any part, engine to engine and it stays in balance. They were not balanced as a complete unit. Why do you think there are still Hudson engines available? Walt.
  • Forgot, the crank was balanced by drilling the counter balancers built on the crank. Walt.

Walt, shame on u; a crank would be unbalanced by drilling holes into counter-balancers; and that would not be too funny
  • You should look at a Hudson crank, that is how Hudson did it. A little drill here and a little drill there. Walt.

Walt won't steer you wrong. Here's the bottom end of my new/never run surplus 308 showing the grease pencil marks still in place from the factory. Rods may have been select fit also as they are all rubber-stamped 0,1,or 2 on the caps.

Well Richie,we'll need a Delorean and a flux capacitor first. Then we can head back to JC Whitney in the early 1960's and grab a load of them. ;)

If only we could do that TwinH. Many times I have thought about growing up in the fifties, the absolute best time ever to grow up. Hard working, honest people, and a handshake was a mans word. Sad to see what we have today. Anyway, I love your engine, just keep enjoying it. !! Richie.
