twin h air filter housing color

Im about ready to start the restoration on my twin h air cleaner housings. I've painted the engine t-bird red and its a good match for the original 54 Hudson color. I don't think its dark enough for the air cleaner housings. Am I wrong? What are you guys using color wise? Rattle can or spray gun?

Chris,I painted my Twin-H air cleaners the same color as the engine. Be extremely careful if you use media or sand blasting to clean them up.Any abrasive material that gets inside needs to be thoroughly blown and vacuumed out
(do both). Any abrasive material left in the air cleaners will get sucked into
the engine and do damage. I packed every opening with rags, then taped every
opening closed, and still got some fine media inside the air cleaners. I know
that others have taken the air cleaners apart, but that's above my level of
expertise.John Forkner0 -
If you want a color that's almost an exact match for the original, you can find it in a spray can, or have your painter mix up a color to match the Dupli-Color Ford #1605.0

Hudson Twin H air cleaners were manufactured by FRAM. The color of these items is a red that is generally not found today. The color is Colonial Red provided by Rustoleum in their new spray can paint line. Not being satisfied with the match, I found one of my dry air cleaners had sufficient original paint that could be scanned for a color mix match. That process was completed with an exact match result. The formula for that paint follows:The formula is attached for those who need it.
Non-Cum Guide - Mix size SP(6.25% of Gallon) 8 oz = Pint
430-25 Bright Red 25.8
430-18 Orange 25.0
430-10 Magenta 21.4
430-03 H.S. White 4.0
430-02 Carbon Black 2.6
435-96 Binder 149.6

The Rustoleum paint is actually named Colonial Red, the color is VERY Close to the one FRAM used, but the scanned paint was indistinguishable from the original color.0

Oldfarmer, what brand paint is that formula for? Did you use a single stage paint or base/clear0
-
Chris
The base paint formulation is fast drying single stage Acrylic Enamel. Brand Name is NASON. I chose this paint because it is the base paint used for farm implements and machinery that is exposed to weather without protection. Same stuff I use to repaint vintage tool boxes I collect.

Do you have a source for the brown wrinkle paint used on Kennedy tool boxes? I think its a dead ringer for the speaker grille on my 54 Hornets brown dash.0

JUST A NOTE ABOUT SAND BLASTING AIR CLEANERS I ALWAYS USE WALNUT SHELL MEDA WE USED IT AT THE SHOP WHERE I RETIRED FROM ON ALL ENGINE PARTS INSIDE AND OUT SIDE OF THE ENGINES IT WILL NOT HURT THE ENGINE IF YOU DON'T GET IT ALL OUT ( BUT STILL TRY TO NOT HAVE ANY GET IN )1
