I, too, was a bit confused on the train ride, when the bandit came through the train with his booty bag. I thought it was part of the joke, so threw in a penny and said, "that's the last cent I have!". Gradually it dawned on me that the "bandit" was soliciting contributions for their performance, so when he returned my way, I too dropped in some additional cash!

Sure seems as though '54's were the dominant year. Was that the case?0

Now that you mention it................. does seem that way. There were quite a few 46 & 47's also.
One thing that struck me as I was wandering the hotel trying to find where I was going is I looked out one window at the air conditioning plant - the thing is bigger than my house!!!!!!!! But, then, that's one humongous building.

The conductor on the train explained to me that the money that they collected was to help with the expenses of feeding and caring for the horses. The people that put on the show are part of a local group and they do it for free, so the reason why they collect money. It was a nice show and also impressed at the end that they paid tribute to the service men / women who have served in the Armed Forces. Performing the Pledge of Allegence was nice also. Then letting the kids sit atop a horse was pretty cool also.Jim SpencerWestern New York Chapter0 -

I seem to recall that meets DID last over the weekend, breaking up on Sunday. I'm not sure how we got to the stage where Saturday is the last day (and people are already taking off on that day).
I'm guessing it's because we now take in parts of two weekends, and the weekdays in between. You go to your employer and ask for the week off, so you get Saturday and Sunday to drive out to the meet. Then you have Monday through Friday to participate in the meet activities, the thing ends Saturday night and you have Sunday to drive home. But for this meet to extend to Sunday night, many folks would need MONDAY to drive home (if not Tuesday as well), and that means you have to ask your boss not only for the week before, but one or two weekdays AFTER the meet's end. This complicates matters I guess.
If a national meet started out on a Tuesday morning and ended Sunday night, you could ask for Tuesday through the following Monday off (5 work days), and the met would occupy the whole weekend with one additional day (Monday) to drive home. But, being bracketed by TWO weekends (as it is when the meet runs all week) you have the luxury of plenty of time to drive out before, and get home afterwards.
It doesn't sound like there's a simple answer here that will please everyone. Maybe you could ask for a day or two off toward the end of the week, which would give you time to really enjoy the meet before it started to break up on Saturday.
