Twin H
What’s the difference between a Twin H on a 262 and one on a 308? I have a 53 super wasp coupe I’m thinking about putting a Hornet engine in. I think I remember reading that the air cleaners were different because of the shorter engine bay or something. Any thoughts.

I have Twin H set up on my '53 Super Wasp sedan with its 262 engine. The rear Twin H air cleaner is at about a 30 degree angle (versus being perpendicular) to clear the vacuum windshield wiper motor. I've been told that there was an apparent add-on for the rear air cleaner that enabled it to be positioned straight across like on a 308.0

I thought it was something like that. Do you have a pic to show?0

I can't seem to add a picture despite using either the image or attach file icons. What gives?!0

Beats me all this tech seems to kick my but from time to time. No problem though.0

Finally, after several attempts to drag the image over, success. Now, wonder what I did right?

That’s what I thought. Thanks0

There is a factory bulletin that describes the process of relocating the vacuum motor to allow the rear aircleaner to sit in parallel with the front aircleaner. Or you can do what Large Paul Schuster did on his Pacemaker Convertible... modify the rear aircleaner with a 90 degree shape to square the alignments.0

Railknight. those air cleaners are the later 55(?).. I have seen them on late 54 cars. I have read that they flow a bit better than the originals.

Dave, there was a club member who did some dyno testing and said the later type actually lost a little hp compared to the early type. I'll try to find it.0

Yes, those are the later air cleaners. Best part about them is they use the FRAM paper filters. Interesting observation is that the decal instructions on each filter canister of my '53 say, Hudson Motor Car Company, Detroit, MI. No where is there mention of American Motors as is apparently the case with the canisters that were used on the 1955 Hudson Twin H.0

The carburetor linkage is also different for the short wheelbase cars from what i understand. It mounts to the bottom center of the engine by the oil ports instead of the top back of the engine.0

The following information can be found on my Hudson Stepdown Restoration site. The site can be reached by clicking on the address shown in the signature on this posting.
Large Paul Schuster restored a 1950 Pacemaker convertible into which he installed a 308 equipped with Twin H. His solution to making the rear aircleaner parallel to the firewall is shown in the following picture:
The following is a screen capture from Page 4-27 of the 1952 Mechanical Procedures manual which provides instructions for the addition of Twin H to a Hudson. This specific piece is focused on a 5B model change. Hudson released several bulletins that provided information about moving the vacuum pump to clear the Twin H rear air cleaner.
The next two pictures show the carburetor base plate differences for Hornet and Wasp Twin H manifolds.
Finally I am attaching a PDF file that shows pictures of the linkages and mounting for the two different Twin H installations.
