  • Yep, they do -- '51 hammered down at $80,000.00
  • 51 HUDSON C8 BROUGHT 82.000 PLUS TEN PERCENT SALES FEE, AND ARIZ SLES TAX, GETS IT CLOSE TO A HUNDRED GRAND. I HAVE 7 AND AM SURE THEY WILL ALL OUTPERFORM THIS ONE. AND NOT ONE OVER 75k, ANY BUYERS OUT THERE LOL, BILL ALBRIGHT

Next time I have 80K to spend I'll be in SoCal at Bill's place. Not Scottsdale. 10% for them to hassle me into the next bid? Sorry lady, I'll give you $20 and let you ride in the car, maybe.

Do you have to pay AZ sales tax or just the tax for the state you license it? Or both?

And, would I be correct if I said the Hornet sedan will be a greater indication of where our Hudson prices go in the next year, instead of the coupe?
  • You Only Pay Az Sales Tax If You Are An Az Resident, Otherwise You Pay The Tax In Your State When You Register It Bill A.
  • I don't know about the rest of the crowd, but I'm getting tired of seeing Vettes, T-Birds and overpriced muscle cars. However, at least there have been several station wagons, resto-mods and other cars thrown in for variety. I can't believe the 57 Cadillac 62 Series convertible sold for $200,000.00!

was there TV coverage of the 53 coupe?

I bet they threw in a ton of "Doc hudson" references...

Prices are inflated right now, and B-J is no indicator of real life where these cars should be. Personally, it seems a bit like a popularity contest, if you ask me. I wonder how many of those guys go home and have buyer's regret?

I got a slogan for Bill Albright..

"Buy it at the Twin H ranch, we won't hassle you for a final bid you don't want to make, and heck, we'll even take you out for a steak dinner with every purchase!"

And finally, it really put the 49 coupe Bill had some time back, into perspective, as to what a great deal it was!

51 Commodore sold at $90,200.00. I think the results on the B-J website include the 10-12% commission.

The buyer paid $90.2K plus tax. Out of the $82K bid, what is the net to the seller after registration/commission or other fees B/J may charge? Does he get the $82K or is it less?
  • Ouch...

check out the Barrett JAckson website, they don't do a terrific job covering the details, but from what I hear, here's the deal.

The Hudson convertible got bid to $82,000

okay, so the buyer pays a 10% premium. That's understood by the buyer going into the deal.

well, the seller pays 6% (and this may very well have changed) to Barrett Jackson of the final hammer price as well. So Barrett Jackson collects on both ends of the deal, which in reality, it's their house, they set the rules. Don't like them, don't buy or sell there.

I think in reality, the cars that go across the block more than cover both ends of the fees, at least for the seller, anyway, because figure that most sellers wouldn't even come close to geting what the cars realize across the block at Barrett Jackson.

Hudsondad and me both know someone locally that has a excellent restored 70 monte carlo SS, (AACA senior car, etc..) and he's thinking of selling. I keep telling him to do the Barrett JAckson thing, it would realize far more than he could ever get in any other open market , period. The price he would get woul far more than cover any costs associated getting the car to the auction site, as well as the percentage BJ would charge for the sale.

    Anyway, here's the deal....

Barrett Jackson is just another fake reality TV show...

People get caught up on the notion that once a car goes across the block, that determines the new price for the entire model range. The prices are not realistic, at least in this universe. Most the people at Barrett Jackson are not real, typical enthusiasts, but better described as people that have a lot of money, and prefer to go to BJ, get wrapped up in the fanfare, and buy their cars, which seem to run far and above the real market. It's all for the show. A few of the people there, bidding, are bona fide collectors, who realy desire hard to find, or unique vehicles, that only get offered by Barrett Jackson, like the F-88, or the Parade of Progress Bus, the Bonneville, etc...

Just because a 53 hornet coupe sold for 59K does not make any of our hudsons worth even a similar amount. I dare anyone to put theirs in the next WTN for 49.5K and see how many phone calls they get.

The reality is that it will move the pricepoint somewhat, but unless the market demand will suppport it, the new price point won't hold.

Hudsons coupes may be under valued, but not 59K undervalued.

Agreed, but no one can deny values going up and since there are so few Hudsons in auctions, there only needs to be a few expensive Hudsons sold to move the price guides and MANY car enthusiasts use these as a reference good or bad. The WTN is still the best place to buy these cars because most members are older and don't follow the market.

Someone should put one of those unglamourous Pacemakers up there on BJ and see what stupid people with money will do with that. never seen one even in the best condition that broke 10K (not counting convertibles). I still say it's not good for the hobby, money is the wrong reason to get involved, and I'd hate to see it get away from your average shade-tree mechanic who would like to get into Hudsons. It'd be a real loss.
  • I read a great article on auction houses by a auctioneer who specializes in antique car sales. I cut it out to scan in for posting here and lost the darn thing. The guy said that BJ is not representative of a trend in pricing a particular make. His case in point was a 57 Turnpike cruiser (I think thats the example, car is right year may not be) one sold at BJ for big dollars. A guy came into his auction with a similar car and while the BJ went 200+K this guys topped out at 38K the guy selling was pissed. The auctioneer pointed out the the BJ one had a 100K frameup resto and to get the big bucks like that it has to be done like that and BJ is not indicative of what other aution houses can pull. Yes the price will go up some but not like BJ because that is a media circus. His major point is if you want really big bucks you need to spend big bucks to make that car perfect.

I think a case in point was the 48 Packard Woody from BJ last night that is a super rare car unique and it went for lower than the POS "remakes" of 70's cars. These big buck guys would rather have a replica than the real deal. More money than sense and lots of these old dudes sitting with younger trophy wives.....makes me laugh....Go figure.....

For the most part, the big time car auctions are a rich man's shell game called "Hide the Money." You buy, hold and let them appreciate, all the while not registering them and then selling them "Open Title."

More money than brains? Maybe, maybe not. Lots of old dudes sitting with trophy wives as well as a few with "Boy Toys."
  • HLIN ADDITION TO SELLERS COMMISION THE SELLER HAS TO PAY AN ENTRY FEE OF 500 OR ON UP FOR PRIME TIMEEY HUDSDON DAD AND HUDSON KID, THE BUYER PAYS 8 PERCENT NOT 6. I used to go every year from the start, but not the last 4 years, cant fight the circus atmosphere, BILL ALBRIGHT
  • I would rather buy my cars from Bill. At least you know where they came from and what you are getting. I see stories all the time about BJ cars that are complete basket cases....engines are shot paper work faked. But hey they are now promoting it as reality TV so you get all the horse$h*t with that.

I am now looking for a trophy wife so I can go down and make like a big bidder then when they ask me to pay up I will say no way I only did it for TV and it was good TV and I want my actors pay. I am ok with scale.
  • i agree with hudsonkid! rock stars & lottery winners. the more money than brains analogy sounds right!!
  • One thing no one mentions is how many millions of people are now watching the BJ auctions on TV for entertainment. Exposure is everything. People see a car go for stupid money and many neophites will now think that is what the value is...

Very true niels - then we'll get a lot more mis-information out there and more "what's it worth?" questions at car shows from people who watch it as entertainment.

    scr3w Barrett jackson....

If I won the lottery, say the current powerball, here's what I would do, instead of heading to Barrett Jackson...

I would buy the twin H ranch, move it, and Bill Albright, to COLD Pennsylvania, and have him restore hudsons for me. I think with the 100million plus the powerball is, after taxes, you might have some bargaining power with Bill.

Also, I would move Dave 53-7C out to be my personal chauffer.... kind of like driving Miss Daisy...

While I'm at it, Rambos Ride, he would be moved out, he would be chief fabricator, for the hudson restos....

and I would bring Jay out to do my taxes, and hunt correct, original parts, and coordinate the flathead 6 engine rebuilds...

Finally, 66patrick would be my PR representative.

Thanks for the cushy job offer. Will I be carrying you to the Piggly Wiggly, temple (oye vey!), cemetery, Boolie's, Alabama and to hear MLK give a speach? Will I have to visit you in the hursing home after I "Drive You" CRAZY? :p Oh, and when you're done with a car, I get it for FREE...right?

I'm gonna count those cans of pink salmon....

(pretty good for a kid.. right?)

OK, but don't slip me any of those stiff pork chops. But then again, you and I can make Aidella's chicken, but knowbody can make her coffee. Pretty good for an older kid, aye?
  • Anyone watching BJ right now?

77K for a 68 H/O that had a rust bubble on the fender ! wow...

Yes, I am. Or were you asking someone with a new Hudson site if they are watching BJ and the Bear?

Aren't you forgetting somebody??????????? At least I could end up with a Wasp Convertible????

I caught that too, but when I went back and looked at it again, (TIVO) it turned out to be water drops. I noticed some on the other cars too. It was raining pretty hard outside earlier in the evening.

Believe it or not, many members only advertise their cars in the WTN because they want them to go to a good home where they will be appreciated. I know that's hard to believe in this day and age...

Dana Mecum of Mecum Auctions is a friend of mine, and they are doing very well with muscle cars right now...all bucks, no brains certainly applies to somebody who will pay $250,000 for a '69 Plymouth Barracuda w/hemi. Dana points out that the BJ cars sell for much more during the televised portions. You can check the list to confirm that. If you've got it, I guess you want to flaunt it...

I wonder how many thieves have TiVo?
