I agree with you 100% Jim..Thanks, Ron0 -
Please, unless you can read my mind and know my thoughts, don't take it upon yourself to critique my responses. QUOTE]
Everyone's responses are critiqued by everyone at face value, because of course we cannot read the poster's thoughts. That makes it all the more important to be respectful, and leave out "in your face" statements like "does that suite (sic) you?" Not trying to start a flame here, just a reminder to everyone to review their posts and make sure they're respectful.0 -
Saw this happen once - on our farm, back in the late 60's. We were using a spare battery to jump a tractor, and the battery exploded, right in front of my father. He was lucky, no acid in his eyes, and we were able to hose him down pretty quickly. Luckily, he was wearing a thick flannel shirt and workpants so he didn't get too badly burned by the acid.
Especially with quality being what it is today, you have to be very careful when working near auto batteries. Your father was lucky as was my father-in-law. He did recover, but as you probably know, acid burns can leave terrible scars.0 -
The assumptions made are incorrect. I have no problems with Geoff. In fact, I think he is a great guy. Why is it that certain people feel it is their duty to critique the responses of others? Those who do should not take it upon themselves to imagine things to be what they are not, based on contorting the facts, just to can launch baseless attacks against someone. Before jumping to conclusions, be civil and just ask me.0

Okay, I think we've made our point! Now....back to the discussion at hand!0

Wow, I thought that was an inocent comment. Something like when I might say "how do you like that", or "how do you like me now?"...I think that jimalberta might be over reacting to a nonexisting problem. But, I agree lets just talk cars here. If you got a problem with someone call em' on the phone. Nobody wants to hear about it here. :-)0

So it would appear that problems occur when the battery is being heavily taxed, as I would have expected if failure was to occur, rather than when left in the car doing nothing. Which gets back to the point - do you want to induce a failure by fitting a suspect cut-off switch, precluded any possibility of electrical catastrophe whilst your car is in storage by diisconnecting the battery, or take the lazy way like me and leave everything alone!

Geoff.
In the case of my late father-in-law, the battery was installed in the car and was not in use. He just happen to have his face near it when it exploded. But that's not to say that a battery in use can't explode. I guess I must be lazy too. I leave the batteries in my cars and keep a battery tender on them
as do friends who, together, we have a total of 33 cars. Sure, you can take the batteries out, install disconnects and do a variety of other things. But, despite our best efforts, sometimes unexpected things happen. In summary, there is no right or wrong approach to this topic. Everyone has different needs and should do what they feel is best for them.0
