Replacement for broken headlight switch?

I have a 1948 Super Six. It looks like the parking light and dash light circuits on my headlight switch don't work anymore. I have tested these circuits by unplugging the wires and hitting them with 12v, and the lights work. The headlight circuit itself works just fine.

Does anyone have a part number or year of a more modern car (assuming NAPA can't get the Hudson switch). I'm sure this headlight switch was made for several models over several years. It looks pretty basic. It's a 4 circuit switch, headlight, marker / tail lights, interior lights, and I don't know what. :-)

I've put relays in my car, so I suppose I could cheat and run all the lights off the relay (instead of just the headlights, as intended). That would mean in effect a single switch; all lights on or off.

Anyway, any ideas as to what I can do about this switch?

Thanks;

  • Chris, I replaced the headlight switch in my 51P years ago with a generic bubble-packaged item off a rack at the auto parts store, and it's worked fine. "hitting them with 12v"? I hope you had made the 12v conversion first!

    Good hunting...

    You may be thinking about some of the older cars (and tractors) that had wierd stuff built into (or onto) the switch- like a fuse, or a resistor for hi-lo beam, etc. Generally, if the existing switch is just a box with terminals, a generic will work.

    That's right, generic will work fine and a little careful screening on said part, you can make knob and/or trim ring work along with the new switch.
