Eureka guys! With the design provided, Pierre went to look back at it and found 2 rollers and said he was now in deep doo-doo. (lol) he wants to know now if he can put it back in place or if he has to change the whole part,,He also asked how many there was, but Ken already answered it (16). Thanks Ken.
Looks were near the end. Michel
  • If he has them all tell him to put some heavy grease on them to hold them in place till it goes back together again,
    Roger
  • Sorry Ken , its all Greek to me .. .. .. :D

@Roger: I think Pierre just got himself a Chinese puzzle...
Pierre sent me these pics and told me he took all the parts off... I have to admit he is very courageous cause it's the first time he does that. He wants to know if there is any special thing he should be aware of? He wanted to know where to put back the rollers but Ken and Roger already answered. I think it would have been simpler to put them back without taking all the rest...
Michel
  • Is Pierre in the club and able to access Alex's library ? If so maybe looking at a service manual my be of some help ?

Yes he is and I think he has access to a manual, but since the manual is in English, it's not easy for him. That's why I'm trying to help the best I can. I'm glad to have you and all the others on this topic. Michel

Pierre, Do you want a gearbox with overdrive??? Much better for the 100-120 km / h car! David Bergamin is getting an engine to Zurich. and if you get an overdrive (from?) Doug Wildrick, it can be delivered at the lowest price together with David's engine.

I think this would solve is problem right away, plus it would be better for the highway. Hope he will see this message asap. Thanks, Michel.

I wrote Pierre and told him about it. He wrote me back and he probably would be interested. David Bergamin's home is less than 100 miles from his I think. He have ordered a wiring harness from YNZ but he said he would have to tell them to modify it for overdrive. I will write Doug about it and send the info to Pierre. Thanks all, Michel
  • Dont forget the front part of driveshaft is shorter on overdrive cars, will need that too,

@Ken: Could you translate this one for me? These are the latest news from Pierre. He will try to put back his gearbox.
From Pierre: Could you ask this to Doug?

''Cela concerne le reglage des doigts pour l'embrayage.
Voici ce que je pensais faire:
Demonter le volant moteur et fixer le mecanisme et l'embrayage comme il doit etre , et regler la pression du plateau et donc des doigts en meme temps en agissant sur les trois visses qui les maintiennent sur le mecanisme. Ask him if I'm OK.''

Michel: My translation would be: It's about the setting of the fingers. Here is what I expect to do: Take off the flywheel and fix the mecanism and the clutch as it should be, and settle the pressure of the plate and, by the same time, the pression on the fingers, working on the 3 bolts that hold them on the mecanism..

Hope it's not too hard to understand. So, Ken, check my translation and I will wrtie Doug to come and see.
    Ouf! Michel

@Ken: Thanks for the translation. It's far better this way. I already wrote Doug, and Pierre decided to repair his clutch assembly. That's why he wanted to know if the way he would do it is OK. Michel

Nope! He had already ordered and paid the wiring harness and it was on it's way and he had to keep some money for the interior work etc. Michel
I will have to visit him some day cause I want to see the Schlumpf's brothers museum that I had heard of for the first time in the seventies in an edition of Old car magazine. Incredible story!
  • no problem Michel, you are welcome. This museum is really great, here's a preview

@SuperDave: Hudson Family is the Biggest One in the World! Who knows, in the year 2525 somebody from Mars will send a message asking some infos about an Essex that was brought back by some aliens 500 years before...( I think that little squirrel in my head is running too fast...) Michel

    Hi Pierre !
I will try to help you too, I was unaware of your issues as I was not much on our great forum last days !
All of you can now see how complicated the French language is, you need at least 50% more words to say the same things than in English :-O

Bravo Pierre! Ton premier message dit que ça fonctionne. Mais je ne comprends pas le second
    Pourrais-tu l'écrire en français? Michel
I'm saying to Pierre that I understand his first message saying that it works but would like him to write his second message in french cause I can't understand this one.. Michel
  • Hello Michel

Pierre was asking 'where' the problem is on his second message.
He said he still has an issue with the pressure plate, according to Ken the fingers are worn out, he has also some burn traces. The intends to go for remplacement parts with Ron.
He send a mesage to Doug and Ron but did not get a reply yet.

Going back to the very first message, the clutch pedal does not come back when pressed once and it seems there is not enough pressure on the plate. So it sounds like the throw-out bearing get stucked because of uneven finger heigth.
It there a way to resurface the flywheel, pressure plate and the fingers ?

  • There is a huge return spring for the clutch return linckage that frequently breaks and is not noticed due to its location. It mounts on the outside (left on left hand drive ) of the frame rail and is about 18 inchs long or so. It may be gone if hes having return problems,
    Roger

Hello Pierre. As I said, if you follow the procedures in the Hudson shop manual, you will somewhat be able to set it up. The only problem is the book describes getting new replacement parts for worn items. I have special tools and equipment that we recondition these with, and they won't apply to your set-up. I am trying to help, but you probably need to purchase a reconditioned unit. Also remember, once you have started the transmission into the clutch disc,DO NOT let it hang. This will bend the center in the clutch disc every time and subsequently cause damage!
