I may have overlooked 1 or 2 but this is the count I came up with in the H.E.T. Club Roster. I expected to see more pre 1942 Hudson. This list includes Hudson,Terraplane and Essex Pickups world wide.
1923 1
1927 1
1929 3
1931 1
1934 1
1935 3
1936 8
1937 20
1938 3
1939 6
1940 4
1941 23
1942 7
1946 116
1947 136
1948 1
1949 2
1950 1
1952 2
Total 340 pickups listed in Roster
and
Fire Trucks 4
1922 1
1926 1
1927 1
1937 1

If you do not see your truck in roster feel free to add your PU to the count that missed the cut off date?

Plus:
I have 2 more 47s that missed publish cut off date.
My son Rick has a 47 cab and two rear fenders for a starter.
I know of 2 more club members 47 PUs not in roster.
That makes 5 more.

    Hi Lee, Bent Metal's dad has a Hudson Pick-Bed made into a trailer, also has a Pick-up cab. So 2/3 + 1/3 = 1 Hudson Pickup.

I know there are many Hudson owner that probably do not know about HET Club yet. Larrys DATA BASE may contain PUs no longer in Roster. I would like to get a copy of his data.

Vic, Rick is into Modified cars. The cab is planned for later model chassis and running gear.

Terry, your 1935 Terraplan G is listed. Took awhile to find it again. You made it quicker by adding Redondo Beach. My Grandparents lived there before moving to Kansas.

1GH thanks for the photo and data. Cool truck.

Paul & Doc, thanks for the input. Love those short PUs. Any chance getting names and Vin #s. I have a 150" long wheel base 47 Hudson PU I would trade for one of those short bed PU. Fat chance. Ha Ha

So far my Dads old white 1946 Hudson PU Vin # 3825906 with 57 Olds eng & automatic has not been registered with Larry. I would love to locate it. My wife and I dated in it. My brother and his wife dated in it. Dad sold it in Dec 1974 while I was away going to aircraft school in Tenn. to a Willa or Willy Greenblatt of Los Angles. Any help locating it would be appreciated.

I would like to start a index of all PUs by vin #s in sequence to see if any were on the same production lline together.

Thanks for all the post fellas.

How many Hudson ambulances, hearses and other commercial vehicles?
  • RL Chilton

    Lee-

Adjacent vehicles off the line are usually considered "siblings", while two-away are usually "cousins". It would be interesting if you found any with the commercial vehicles, and highly unlikely, I would think with the relatively few survivors.

Good question Barry. That would be interesting to know. Would you please search the roster for that information. I was getting blury eyed by the time I did a second search in the roster for PUs I did not feel up to expanding the search beyond PU's. Even though I added the Fire Trucks that cought my eye. I did see a ambulence and a hearse. There are probably more of them and other commercial vehicles listed. I was not looking for them. For the time being I will be focused on the PUs. Thanks for asking and I will add your interest to the list any information you gather.

Lee, My "hot rod" is a 1928 Essex Roadster Pick up. I am not sure you would want to list it in the roster; but, then again, it does serve as an educational tool each time I drive it because most folks have never heard of an Essex? Missed you at Laughlin, and you missed a chance to see the Essex....

Brownie I wish I could have been there Brownie. HET PUs in or out of the Roster, original, mod, hot rod, rat rod custom, ect. If its a HET PU it is in. What is your Vin # You notice there are a few stepdown mod and other mod pickups listed. The biggest problem I foresee will be getting non listed vin #s. This project may become as time consuming as a restoration and may become like pulling teeth to get vin info.

Did you find the wheel you were searching for?

Also, I need to get my PU on the road so I can enjoy the adventures you fellas are having with yours.

My email is HETcleescars@yahoo.com for anyone that would prefer to give PU and vin information that way. Remove het. Lunch time. Have a great day.

You guys should register at HETclub.org and use the vehicle search button "find a club vehicle".

The Hudson Essex Terraplane Club web site shows the following...

    908 pickups
    1 sedan delivery
    7 panel delivery
    1 hearse

Thanks John, nearly tripple the number of PUs. Good news. Getting a list copy of the above trucks would be a big help.

The bad news is I have not been able to access the HET webb site. I have tried many times today and in the past but I keep getting a "verificatioon code invalid" message while trying to renew my password. Or sometimes the message says my email is already in use, use another email address. Any help would be appreciated. I don't like getting frustrated.

Anyone have thoughts about how to format the list. My initial thoughts.
Vin # in sequence - year, model PU - owners name - address - phone #

Thanks you all. It is a beginning.

Lee, I tried your email but it would not work for me. I expect it is me? But this is what I sent:

I now have eight wheels. As luck would have it I have five good ones and three that are good up to 40 mph. When you follow Mike Cherry down the road you should be prepared to go 80 mph. With that, I am now in good shape. I have had it up to 88 mph.

I am bringing the English Hudson to the Western Regional in April and most likely the 54 Hudson (George’s car) to Laughlin next year.

The VIN for my roadster pick up is: 1HXA31AA1AE006604

My insurance and state motor vehicle department does not know what to call it and they made up the number above so it would meet their requirements. This is something that Utah does with all old cars,.

Gerald I need vin. We both have 52 Hornet sedans. I'm sure the truck will also be a #1 condition.
My mistake Brownie. I corrected my email post. Thanks for vin. That may be why I have seen some od vin # in Roster.

Formatting the list: put it in a pivot table in MS Excel. That way you can click on any category and the list will format itself.

Basicly yes with a twist Alex.
    1. I had an idea to list 46-47 PU vins in sequence to start with on index cards from beginning to end of production using the Club Roster as as source. Mainly as a qurious interest to see if any PUs listed may have been on the same assembly line as siblings or cousins as Russel mentioned. Then to contact Josh to hopfully get a copy of his truck registery to add those vin # in sequence with the other vins.
    2. As I was marking the trucks in the Roster I decided to include all PUs and counted how many there were for each year.
    3. Then I posted what I had on the forum. As I was posting, it occured to me because I have two PUs not in the Roster others might also have missed the cut off date to be included. So I added the request for them to add to the list their PUs.
    4. That brought in more PUs and information about other PUs not even in the club.
The snow ball is getting bigger. Then I find there is 908 PUs listed on the HET web I can not access yet.
    5. Then request for all commercial vehicles.
    6. Perhaps through the effort more PUs my become known to add to the Russels and HET web list.
    7. Is Russels lists and HET web list the same?
    8. The snowbal may become bigger than I can handle. Will see how it goes. It looks like the snowball is going to need computer skills I had not anticipated. Will see how it goes. It is exciting to see what new additions to the Hudson PU list will be.
    9. This is what has develop so far.
    10. If more PUs can be found thats a plus and maybe introduce PU owners that may not know about the HET Club and join the club. I would pass on any new PUs information to be added to the existing list
    11. I was surprised about the 340 to 908 count difference between the Club Roster and the HET web.

    Lee-

I agree . . . I think there is something very wrong with the 568-vehicle difference. something is not right, there. I did notice when I was perusing the '52 Hornet convertible list, there were many that were not convertibles, and some that no longer exist and even some duplicates. I think that once you really get into it, you will find that that 908 is erroneous.

Russ, that is the Union Pacific depot in downtown Ogden. I added another photo so you can see more of the building. The building houses the Browning arms collection and the Browning Car collection. This is where Doc Hudson stayed during his visit to Utah. The building is about three times the size you see but there is no way to get it all in the photo.

I thought that's what it was. I've seen that building once before (I love train stations). Great pics!

I think it would be difficult to know just how many pickups were built to start with. Can't go by shipping records because that is just a number of commercial vehicles shipped. Commercial vehicles included pickup, panel trucks, utility coupes and sedans and station wagons. Then there are the dealer or outside built trucks because you could buy just a cab and chassis and have an independent build you a custom body on that frame. Ambulances are another bird in their own right. These, of course, were custom built. In the odd-ball category are sedans converted to ambulances - there were many of these running around Australia back in the 20's and 30's.
The only years that you could possibly use shipment figures for production would b 1946 and 1947 as only pickups were built. I've not yet found out if the factory supplied taxi cabs or utility coupes and sedans in '46 and '47 - tho I know there were business coupes and these were probably lumped into the commercial shipments.

As time permits I will update with new vin numbers. Also, work on all the other years as well.

I hope those in group 2 will want to add their vins to the list. One of my goals is to see if any number will be brothers.

To save time I only included names. Any other info can be found in the HET Roster.

I will include PUs from none club members also. Besides name it would be good to include their vin #, phone number and address would be welcome. Hope this may be a small incentive to gain new club members.

I gave some thought to searching previous HET Club Rosters also.

What do you think so far?

Here is Jeff Green's 37 Terraplane Doodlebug (Tractor)
Original 212 (rebuilt by Cramer's garage)
Front tranny is original T. interlocked 3 speed
Rear Tranny appears to be a 4 speed Ford truck
Rear end and wheels appear to be military Dodge
13 Speeds ahead, 7 in Reverse Figger that one out!

Not really germane to the subject, but a commentary on multiple drive vehicles. Years ago my Dad had a 1943 Dodge tank retriever truck. Dual rear axle so it had 10 wheels. Had a huge dual tranny with 6 speeds, high and low range, out of each one so 12 speeds overall. It was synched so you could put both trannys in gear at the same time - in the same speed range, of course. You could also select 2 wd using just the front axle; 4 wd using one rear axle; 6 wd using front and one rear axle; 8 wd using both rear axles; or 10 wd using all wheel drive.
The transmission gear ran in oil - that was a wonder. Had a drain plug in the bottom to drain the oil; then you could remove the side covers and fix a broken gear - all gears were split and bolted together in halves so very easy to replace a bad gear.
It had a 16 foot bed that, from pictures I've seen, originally held a crane arrangement for hauling tanks, half-tracks and other heavy equipment out of the mud or ditch.
Dad used it to haul logs out of the woods to a saw mill he had. You could have moved a house with that thing. Put the low range tranny in first (lo-range) and put it in 10 wd and it would climb a mountain - at about 3 mph.
