new spokes

where do you get new spokes from?

i searched and one guy said send me the whole wheel, shipping alone would kill me in$$$.

another guy said 160$ US for a full set NEW (48 spokes for 160$) sounds too good to be true.

I'm in Canada and would like to keep it sent from Canada.

But i seem to be hitting all scammers.

would need someone that has one of these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdlpI11xGso

  • Coker Tire makes them in Chattanooga. I don't know the quantities they will sell in.

We have a guy here in N.Z. does them for $250 per wheel.

  • is that spokes only or do i have to send the whole wheel?

    the shipping would kill me

I could a get wheel done for you, and that would mean you only have freight one way. Are you talking back or front wheel?

  • Geoff
    Geoff Senior Contributor

I have both front and back.

  • i can press the spokes in myself.

Mr Clark are you talking about the complete wheel? with spokes on (less tires)

What I could do is send a wheel to the guy , get him to make up the spokes, and then remove the spokes and send them to you. Or else I could send the wheel assembled, minus the centre hub and drum.

  • What I could do is send a wheel to the guy , get him to make up the spokes, and then remove the spokes and send them to you.

yes that would be the best i think

  • assembled without hub and drum.... would this include the rim ??

  • Geoff

Yes, outer rim (felloe) included. Will find out how much to send and let you know before I do anything. Have you tried shimming the ends of the spokes? I did mine 40 years ago and they are still tight.

  • yes i routinely put in brass shims at end of spokes about every 200 miles, i have a set of front and rear that i rotate once i notice loose spoke or 2

but the ends that goes into rim are getting worn small, also notices a few cracks in rim where spokes goes into, 1928 steel is showing its age (cracks are rusty)

    keep me posted please

Brass is too soft. Use steel at least .015 thick.

  • i will see what i can find, thank you for your help

Brass was my upgrade from copper which was obviously too soft

Do you need front or back wheel?

  • either ones have same spokes i presume...

  • i recall you telling me that empty paint cans cut to make shims would work for 0.015 shims

  • Geoff
    Geoff Senior Contributor

Front and back wheels have different length spokes (different diameter centres.) Yes, paint tin is ideal material for shims.

  • wow more learning about the length of spokes,

ill work on a new approach with the empty paint spray cans. car is parked for the hibernation of winter (in a heated garage never less than 15C )

  • Geoff
    Geoff Senior Contributor

No, no, paint spray cans are thinner than ordinary paint tins (with lids.) The type that house paint comes in.

  • ohhhh wow,

ill make a jig and press into shape the loonie size disks , if i make 12 and press all 12 into the rim thats going to be a lot of pressure........

  • Geoff
    Geoff Senior Contributor

It has to be a lot of pressure, to take the strain outwards, which holds everything together.

For your interest, but it's still in the wrong country. Other brand old car clubs could be a source of information, respoking wood spoke wheels is very much a low profile and niche industry.

To me, buying a set of spokes (and spokes ain't just spokes, there are many variables), pressing them into a rim and hoping to end up with a usable wheel, is not a good option.

And of course, it is essential if shimming a wheel, all spokes have to be done. And the spokes must be kept in their original positions.

  • so bottom line, new spokes only, REAR one side cost ?

  • Geoff
    Geoff Senior Contributor

Ball park figure, including sending to the wheelwright and back here, plus postage to Canada, probably around $500. I would recommend not dismantling the new spokes, but sending the whole felloe, minus the centre. No charge for the felloe.

  • so $500 US through PayPal =692.57 CAD .... Yikes
