FYI

Interesting to know a Person that helped Tim Flock's stunning Performance. I bet the Motor was awsome to Drag..

The autograghed Picture of Frank Mundy with the '54 Hornet is different and a real collectable.

I thought I caught part of an interview with Mundy and some other old Drivers last wk on a Daytona Pre-Race special. I am waiting for a re-run being the 60th Yr of NASCAR

With the Duability of Hudson's suspension able to withstand Racing abuse lap after lap on rough dirt Tracks, there is little reason to update to more modern Suspension other than 'power steering'or personal preference...

More Pictures & 'Fast Track Facts' later.......

    A Hudson 'Fast Track' fact..

Herb Thomas, 1951 & '53 NASCAR Season Champion And '54 Daytona 'Winner'

Note: The Outside Mirror & the Wing window glass..........
  • I don't remember ever seeing a picture of Mundy's 54 hudson before. Thanks for sharing.

Id agree completely with this comment ,- except for ease of finding replacement parts and having the center pivot steering in the way for a different style engine swap and not lending itself to adding power steering - the original is as good as anything using coil springs and A arms, only difference is the original Hudson front suspension is way stronger. The early demo derby guys unfortunately loved Hudsons because the front wheels were almost impossible for the competors to knock off , no weeny ball joints to break !!!

    Stateline,

Your correct about scarce replacement components and the center steering point too..

Motor Trend's Top 50 Most Memorable Car <> The 1951 Hudson Hornet

I copied and saved this intersting Article from Motor Trend Magazine a few yrs ago that Ranked the '51 Hudson Hornet as #2 in their Top 50 Most Memorable Cars 'Ever Tested'. I apologize for the picture quality. I will type The article 'Quoting in parts'...

Cars of the '50's are considered slow by todays Standards; However in their Mar'51 Issue. M/T said the Hornet Hums, Buzzes, Zooms, and does everything a real Hornet (insect) would do (except fly). M/T said regarding flying, the Hornets Top Speed is not far from 'Take off' Speeds as the Hornet had the Fastest Top Speed of any car Tested (This Test was performed before Twin H Power)!

As history reveals the Hudson NASCAR Racing Legacy followed Motor Trend's early Road Test Report........

    Hudson TRIVIA

Did you know back In the early Racing Days NASCAR had a competitive Sanctioning Body named AAA...

Not sure how long AAA existed, but in the 13 AAA Sanctioned Races that year, Hudson Hornets Won 12 Times, and Hornets also finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th, 20 Times...

Note Hornet's sitting on the 'Pole'

    Simply Amazing Feat's in retrospect.....

I think we need to expand this to the Hudsons that were in all types of racing. It is a good collection.....

FYI.... Early Stock Car Racing was not without Tragedy due to primitive (virtually non-existant) Safety Equipment. Attached picture of Driver Frank Luptow who was 2nd in Point Standings and Marshall Teague's closest competitor. Unfortionately, Luptow crashed while attempting to take the lead at Atlanta when an axle broke rolling his Hudson end for end throwing Luptow out losing his life.... Teague's Hornet WON Atlanta, Frank Mundy's Hornet was 2nd, and Red Bryon's Hornet was 3rd

Darlington was a rough Dirt Track & tough on all the competitors in the early days......

PS: Running low on 'Hudson Stock Car Racin' Pictures.. If you have any please forward to me to Post. Special Thanks go to HudsonKid for the Thread and to the People that posted Pictures or sent Pic's to me to Post... I think the Pictures clearly reveal the dominate superiority 'Hudson Hornets' were in Speed, Endurance, & Durability over all other Brands during that era....; Suggestion was made to open up soon to include all'Hudson Racin' Pictures (Road/Drags/etc)but that would be up to Thread Starter, Hudson Kid.[/

Hudson scored another First by advertising their Racing Wins & Endurance on the world's toughest proving Grounds on weekends sells Cars during the week...

(Ad quote in part) Chips are down in Stock Car Racing..Claims mean nothing, Results alone Count. On the Race Track America's Cars compete on an equal basis, one against the other... How does the car you drive make out in competition?.... Well drop in to our Dealership today, or call us, and we will bring a new Hudson to your door to demostrate the attributes....

(In retrospect, Its a shame the 'big Three' began squeezing all of the Independents with dificulty receiving raw materials, etc, forcing many Independents like Hudson to consoldate in order to survive ending this dominance) Ol Racer

    FYI

Early NASCAR Stock cars were towed (and driven) from Track to Track criss-crossing the Country using just a towbar (unlike today with double enclosed trailers) there were probably more than a few towing Accidents.

This Picture (from the White Triangle Magazine) reveals a rare position to view Marshall Teague's Stock Car after the operator (not Marshall) lost control towing from Daytona to El Paso to meet Teague for a race in California.. Nobody was hurt ...

    More Hudson NASCAR Trivia..

A lot of us have heard of the 'Darlington Speedway Stripe' during the televised Race....

I never knew the 'Darlington Stripe' comment actually got its name from Marshall Teague & Herb Thomas often laying their Hudson's RR quarter Panels against the walls 'coming out of the turns' scrapping to victory while the other cars avoided the wall because they would snag without the perimeter frame....

NASCAR Trivia... How many of us knew the following.....

Marshall Teague was using Smokey Yunick's engines successfully when Nascar's Big Bill France suggested Teague go to Detroit and meet with Hudson Engineers... After the meeting, Hudson began the 'Severe Usage' Program building Twin H Intakes, 7X motors, and HD suspension components...

(Teague & Yunick were an 'awsome' Hudson Team)

<> Incidently, One Hudson Engineer that met with Teague was Vince Piggins, who later went to work at Chevrolet to develop a similar 'Off-highway High Performance Pkg' . Vince also was the 'father' of the Z28.... Ol racer
