A little known 'Fact' about the creation of a very famous Logo..................
from Rudy Bennett collection.....Old White Triangle News.... Ol' Racer0 -
Just a thought...
I have to wonder how much a Hudson Dealer would have 'discounted' the Hornet for resale 'after a Race' as they originally intended...0 -
FYI
Attached a Hudson Magazine Advertisment featuring the Popular NASCAR Drivers of the period reasons for switching over to Hudson....Safety, Durability, Handling, and Performance!!! Rudy Bennett collection from an old White Triangle News.... Ol'Racer0 -
Hudson Hornet Champion Driver Herb Thomas pictured showing Track Inspectors his 'Trap Door' system to keep mud from clogging the radiator while overtaking cars than lifted from inside when got into the Lead... Today NASCAR would disallow it.... Picture from Rudy Bennett collection saved from old White Triangle News.......Ol'Racer0

Comment...
In my opinion these early NASCAR Drivers were men with gusto that could man handle these heavy 'Stock Cars' with only minimal safety equipment, without power steering, without weight balancing the chassis, no stagger, or even decent tires.
Actually tires were their weak point using truck tires the norm. Often Drivers drove & towed their own stock car State to State and raced several times a week unlike once a wk today on crude bumpy tracks... In fact I read where one famous Hudson Driver was sleeping in the infield grass after driving all night to get to the next track when he was accidently run over by a track vehicle.... Luckily he lived but missed several races....
Think about how far NASCAR racing has come where little debris falls on the track they quickly yellow flag, and young kids can drive all power equiped cars that all look alike, with the best of everything, then if one component falters they fall off pace....
I doubt if any of todays top Drivers could have competed against the early pioneer Drivers in their primitive Cars... Just my opinion....... Ol'Racer0 -

FYI
Did you notice that in all the Hudson pictures submitted there is rarely a 'dent'... Could it be they always were out front? This picture reveals slight contact on the way to the front with a 'bent' bumper guard....Herb Thomas drove in pretty hard here....Ol' Racer....

Darlington Museum enshrined the Fabulous Hudson Hornet ... The actual Race Car Herb Thomas Won his 1st Championship and restored 7X Motor under cover...... Ol' Racer0 -
B]FYI
Just in case you think the Drivers were not agressive with virtually No Safety Equipment and many with out even a roll bar..... check
out this crash.. These Guys were fearless... Amazing when you think they would tie the door shut and race hundreds of miles without
power steering and all the
other modern enhancements of todays Racers....

Did you know Tim Flock Won the '52 NASCAR Championship on his Head?....
Tim rolled over several times in the home stretch on the last lap as Herb Thomas took the Win at West Palm Beach Fl. Tim crawled out and said"I bet im the only Driver to win a Championship on his head"
Still looking for as picture og Jocko... Can you help?
Ol'Racer0 -
Ouch, Poor Tim Flock...
After Winning the '52 Championship mid Season in 1953 after an all night drive from NY to South Carolina, Tim was taking a nap in the infield before the race with another Driver and was 'backed over' by a Champion Sparkplug Represenitive .
Tim suffered serious head injuries that put him out of competition for months...Tim survived to Race again and work for NASCAR... Pettys Dodge Won the race Bakers Olds was 2nd, then Hudson's took the next 7 Spots.....0 -
FYI
Those Fence Posts had to be treacherous without a guard Rail to slide along... The Cars would get caught then stop suddenly....
Ol'Racer0 -
FYI
At this Point I am all out of Hudson NASCAR Pictures unless something else turns up.. Lets never forget that the 'Fabulous Hudson Hornet 6's' had over 80 official NASCAR Victories and 2 Season Championship Titles against all V8's..... An accomplishment that will 'never again' be parralled by a 6 cyl engine.....
Thanks again to everyone that contributed Pictures, for all the Viewers, and to NASCAR for continuing to pay tribute to the Hornets Racing Legacy.......
Ol' Racer0 -
ol racer,
thanks for all your efforts in posting all these classic photo's for the rest of us to enjoy, you're truely a dedicated fan of the 'Fabulous Hudson Hornet' ! ! I wish we were closer geographically, so I could sit down with you and personally reminice about the 'glory years' when this history was made. You're a lucky individual to have been able to find out for yourself how potent the 'obsolete' flat-head 6 actually was (and still is ! ). I hope that you're able to find some more vintage photo's of the old Hudson's proving their worth ! ! You might want to google 'Cowley County Fairgrounds' , there are some OLD Hudson racer's on this site, back in the 'Terraplane' days, runnin' the 254" straight 8's. alway's remember, the sun never sets on a legend, that legend being the "Hudson Hornet' ! !

Just Imagine .....
54 Years after Hudson left NASCAR Racing the Flock Brothers are still in the News in 2008 primarily because of their many fantastic Wins in those Fabulous Hudson Hornets..........Attached is a copy of an article from National Speed Sport News on May 28, 2008...0 -
Attached is a 1953 NASCAR Southern 500 Decal that

As I've mentioned on the forum a great book to read is "Driving With The Devil - Southern Moonshine, Detroit Wheels, and the Birth of NASCAR"
While there isn't all that much about Hudson's, it really isn't that sort of book. It concentrates, heavily, on the early days providing a really good look at the rivalry between Bill France's Daytona bunch and the moonshine drivers from North Georgia and Atlanta. That interplay itself is fascinating.
The book is still available thru www.alibris.com or, I think, www.amazon.com - well worth the read.
